Victor Chab was born in Buenos Aires city, September 6th in 1930, into a family of Jewish immigrants. They came from Damascus, and after a short stop in Cuba they settled down in Argentina, where they dedicated themselves to commerce. When he was thirteen, just after primary school, Chab had a clear calling for painting. Self-didactic, he was a member of many workshops – briefly at Cecilia Marcovich and Demetrio Urruchúa´s – until he came across the free workshop MEEBA (mutual for students and graduated from Art). In 1947 he was awarded the second prize in the XXVI Annual Exhibition at MEEBA. The jury, composed of Antonio Berni and Miguel Carlos Victorica, among others, gave the prize to the piece “Apple on the Table”. In spite of having this early recognition, Chab – young and demanding – burnt all his work created in the years previous to his first exhibition. In 1952 he met Juan Andralis, pupil of the surrealist painter Battle Planas, with whom he became close friends with a deep intellectual understanding. He studied French to be able to read directly the texts by André Bretón and the surrealists who became his poetic referents. FREE scheduling, supersized images and templates. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts and Law School there, only to learn that structured careers were not for him. His first one-man show was sponsored by the Chilean Ambassador at the Maison de L’Amerique Latine in 1961. The late Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain sponsored his second show in Lausanne, Switzerland in 1962. Showing in galleries In the Faubourg St. Honore and the Salon de la Jeune Peninture completed his Parisian background but, by 1965, he had become an adoptive New Yorker. ” He admits to having been “lured like many others by the American Dream on one hand and such movies as’West Side Story,”Breakfast at Tiffany’s,’ and’The Wizard of Oz’ on the other. A successful partnership with Guy Burgos and later Lady Sarah Spencer Churchill led to the opening of the Burgos Gallery on Manhattan’s East Side in 1965. By then his style had evolved into textured oils that the New York Times critic Studart Preston reviewed saying, What Novoa seeks to discover in his often fanciful landscapes and still-lifes is their identity, that special something that makes them unique. Bonds with reality are very hard to shake once you establish them. With this premise in mind Novoa constructed, without the help of the real jungle or zoos, a new Paradise of mystical serenity. The environment he created exceeded the limitations of Time and Space. Panthers, lions, zebras, tigers, elephants, peacocks, and rhinos, deprived of their ferocity, seemed to observe the observer with wise and amused tolerance. Novoa’s one-man shoes of the early 70’s in New York, Paris, Palm Beach and Beverly Hills established him as a champion of ecology and wild-life preservation. His animals were primitive and painted in lush and colorful backgrounds. The publication, in 1977, of his book, “Jungle Fables, ” for which he both wrote the text and executed the paintings, was a collection of rhymes on “Vice and Virtue” that gave a new dimension to his animals making them more anthropomorphic and philosophical. By 1981, Novoa’s paintings had changed again: His show, “The Grand Tour, ” sent his animals prowling the major cities of the world, from the Spanish Steps in Rome to the Left Bank in Paris through the Great Pyramids and back to Park Avenue in New York. It was perhaps the most surrealist of Novoa’s shows. In 1983, a series of shows entitled “Rainbow” opened in Chicago, Palm Beach, and Beverly Hills. From the arc of that rainbow Novoa’s animals shifted their attention to outer space, becoming transfixed by astral phenomena, seeking to unravel the meaning of full and crescent moons, sunrise and sunset, the alignment of the plants, the rings of Saturn, the passage of Venus and Mars. This was the theme of his last lone-man show, “Moon Lovers and Others, ” at the Wally Findlay Galleries in New York in February of 1985. But by Fall of 1985, after their creator had spent time in Santa Fe, New Mexico, these jungle characters seem to have gotten lost in outer space. He depicts the Arizona desert and the Indian pueblos with haunting and surreal qualities under heavy impasto. He calls it his “adobe” period. Developed by Webgyor Global. Magnificent Original Signed Charles B. Foster Oil On Canvas Farmington, Ct
The painting, WINTER MOONRISE, measures 16 x 20 inches and is signed lower left. The painting has been professionally re-lined and is in excellent condition. Charles Foster, the older brother of Ben Foster, was born on the 4th of July, 1850, in the small town of North Anson, Maine. Traveling to Paris in the 1870’s, he became a pupil at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Alexandre Cabanel, a popular instructor of the strictly “academic” school. He later entered the atelier of Louis Jacquesson de la Chevreuse in Paris while also becoming part of a group of American artist that included Charles Noel and Montague Flagg, Robert Brandegee, William Bailey Faxon and John Niemeyer. Upon his return to America he settled in Farmington, Connecticut where he spent the remainder of his life. Foster taught for a short time at the National Academy of Design and was also a member of the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art. While his work consisted primarily of landscapes, the artist also painted portraits, mountain scenes and animals. A memorial exhibition that included 30 of the artist’s works was held in Hartford, Connecticut shortly after his death, which was in 1931. The catalog was warm in its praise of the artist: Although thoroughly trained under the tradition on Ingres, Mr. Painted principally landscapes, excelling in the treatment of skies, and from his studio he had every opportunity to study them, as well as the changing foliage of his beautiful surroundings. EDOUARD CORTES 1887-1969 Fine Original Oil on Canvas French MARCHE Aux FLEURS
Titled “Marche Aux Fleurs”, a lovely post impressionistic painting of a French flower market street scene. Signed at lower left. Ornate gold gilt wood frame has some flaws throughout. Plaque at lower center shows artists name and painting title. Measures 24 1/2″ x 18 1/2″, actual painting measures 18″ x 13″. As found on AskArt. Cortès was born in Lagny, France on April 26, 1882. During his early lifetime, Paris was the center of the art world. Artist from across the globe traveled there to study and paint it’s beautiful countryside and cities; views of Paris, or as it became known’the City of Lights’, were in great demand by both collectors and tourists. Specializing in Paris street scenes, each of these artists captured the city during its heyday and continued with these scenes well into the 20th century. Édouard was the son of Antonio Cortès – the Spanish Court painter – who was himself the son of the artisan André Cortès. Antonio was born in Seville in 1827 and established himself as a painter of rural genre. In 1855 he traveled to Paris for the Exposition Universelle and was drawn to the town of Lagny-sur-Marne – where he settled. He continued to paint scenes reminiscent of Troyon, Jacque and Van Marcke. Antonio had three children – Édouard, Henri and Jeanne – and while all had artistic talent, it was Édouard who had the passion. Antonio began teaching Édouard at an early age and enrolled him in a private elementary school where he continued his schooling until the age of 13. From this point on he devoted his life to art – working and studying with both his father and older brother. In 1899, at the age of 16, he exhibited his first work at the Société des Artistes Français entitled La Labour. 1900, that he began to paint the scenes that he would become most famous for – Paris’ streets and monuments. One of the more prolific artists of his time, Cortès found his niche and stayed with it. His views of Paris are among the most telling and beautiful images of this genre; capturing the city during all it’s seasons for more than 60 years. Édouard married Fernande Joyeuse in 1914 and had a child – Jacqueline Simone in 1916. Fernande died in 1918 and shortly thereafter Édouard decided to marry his sister-in-law Lucienne Joyeuse. They settled in Paris and Édouard continued to paint views of Paris. By the mid 1920’s, Édouard and his family moved back to Lagny (in Normandy) and he began painting scenes of country life – including landscapes, interior scenes and still lives. He was an active member of the Union des Beaux-Arts de Lagny and was the Unions first president. Their inaugural exhibition was held in 1927 and Cortès continued to exhibit there until the late 1930’s. During this period he received many awards, gained great notoriety and was a frequent exhibitor at the exhibition halls in Paris, including the Salon d’Automne, Salon d’Hiver, Salon de la Société Nationale de l’Horticulture and Salon des Indépendants. During the years of World War II, Cortès and his family spent their time in Cormelles-le-Royal (in Normandy) in an attempt to remove themselves from the harsh realities of war. By the early 1950’s he had relocated to Lagny, where he would remain for the rest of his life. P Larde makes the following observation about Cortès in his book on Antoine Blanchard: [he] was preeminently the painter of Paris of the Nineties, which he had loved and known well; his qualities as a painter, in addition to his sensitivity, allowed him to paint the street scenes of that time under their most charming, attractive and real light. Transposed by his brushes, each spot of Paris becomes a veritable sparkling jewel. The most ordinary scene, through a sensitive, generous and elaborate palette, irresistibly fascinates and moves us. Only through a detailed study of his canvases can we understand how this artist, with apparently simple means, could obtain such gripping effects. His bold touch never lingers over a superfluous detail. It is not surprising that his works, more valuable each day, were appreciated by many collectors. Cortès’ beautiful depictions of Paris were always in demand and he continued to paint them until his death in 1969.
