PAUL BURLIN Signed c. 1925 Original Oil – LISTED. This is a magnificent original signed museum quality oil on canvas painting by internationally acclaimed artist PAUL BURLIN (American, 1886 -1969), circa 1925. Still Life with a Vase of Flowers. Is signed by the artist on the front lower left “Paul Burlin”. It measures 26″ x 32″ and is framed in a spectacular antique gold leafed wood frame for a total size of 33″ x 40″. It is in good condition aside from surface craquelure and signs of age. It would benefit from a professional cleaning and conservation. Gallery retail prices are always much higher. Paul Burlin, a participant in the 1913 Armory Show, was a Social Realist for most of his career, influenced at first by the Ashcan School and later by Cubism. Then, at the age of 70, he turned to Abstract Expressionism. In the works following the conversion, Burlin, though a native New Yorker, painted in a manner that was somewhat European, and he tended to harass his paint with gestures that often look more considered than automatist. But, possibly affected by Minimalism, he began to thin his color and simplify his shapes, achieving images that were both lucid and expressive. Inspired by a 1913 visit to the Southwest, he became an early member of the. School of western painting and did Indian portraits and landscapes including the. In the 1912 Armory Show exhibition, he was one of the youngest members in the exhibition and the only painter who had visited the Southwest. However, his abstract, expressionistic style was viewed suspiciously by other painters in the West. Burlin continued to visit the Southwest, and in 1917 married Natalie Curtis, a woman from. Who had studied in. And who subsequently lived in. And devoted herself to preserving the culture, language and traditions of Native Americans. She was especially focused on the songs and chants of the Hopi Indians. Curtis and Burlin lived in. But in 1921, Curtis, age 46, was killed in. By an automobile when she and her husband were in.
