MARJORIE REED 1915-1997 Early California Arizona Western Impressionist
Born in Springfield, Illinois in 1915, she grew up in Los Angeles where her father, Walter Reed, was an illustrator for Walt Disney. After graduating from high school she attended Chouinart Art School and the Art Center school in Los Angeles. Yet she credited her most important formal training to well known California landscape artist Jack WilkInson Smith. Reed claimed to have moved over eighty times in her life, spending most of her years in Arizona and Southern California. Her longest stay in one place was spent in the Tombstone area where she used to own and operate the Adobe Gallery in the 1960’s and 70’s. Marjorie Reed died while raking leaves a few days after Thanksgiving in 1996 at Campbell Ranch in Vallecito, California. This is a large painting of Jerusalem painted by Reed on her visit to the Holy Land in the 80’s. It is from Mt. Of Olives looking down towards the ancient walled city. A nicely done shepherd with his donkey and sheep & below is the Russian church above Gethsemane. It is a 24″x 48″ oil on canvas signed lower right and title labeled on the back by Reed herself. Artist Biography: Jeff Love Born in 1961 into a farming family from Ohio, Jeff spent his early years with a pasture of sheep, acres of corn and a red prairie barn as his playgrounds. As Jeff watched his grandfather shepherd a flock of sheep or harvest a field of corn, a love for nature grew. Art was always of interest to Jeff and the two seemed to go together well. A move to Colorado during his early teen years brought about a new love to build his growing interest in art on § The Rocky Mountains. Excelling in art in school, a high school teacher recognized that Jeff needed to go farther and encouraged him to take college courses while in high school at an art school in Colorado Springs where he explored various mediums and styles. After high school, Jeff studied art in college in Kansas City, Kansas, furthering his skills which led to an award in watercolor and representation in a gallery show. After college, Jeff felt a call on his life to a career in ministry and has spent many fulfilling years helping others discover their unique giftedness and purpose in life. Ministry has taken Jeff to Colorado, Nebraska, West Texas, and Arizona, where he now lives. During these years, Jeff focused his continuing education in ministerial studies, painting mostly for enjoyment and as an outlet. Finally, in 2007, Jeff recognized that an important part of his own life-purpose was creating and painting. Jeff is a firm believer and has taught countless many that it is never too late to become the best that God intends you to be. Actively pursuing painting with the inspiration and encouragement of instruction from some of his favorite artists, Jeff’s medium of choice is oil in which he has dedicated himself to exploring the Arizona landscape both en plein air and in the studio. Jeff loves to teach, paint and study art, wander the wilderness looking for just the right light, and his paintings are often inspired from some remote mountain location in the high desert of Southern Arizona. In this painting, I captured the time before sunset when the sun is just beginning to descend, deep dark blue shadows appear on the horizon and suddenly glows golden reflections on the mountains. I start the painting process by mixing natural ground pigments, often grinding them by myself from minerals with the medium. I finish the painting working with oil. It gives me the opportunity to present my subject in an aura of light, vibrant color and freshness. Sale of the item does not transfer copyrights. A lifetime fine artist, Helen Sviderskis pursued a successful career in the conservation and restoration of fine art before turning to paint full time. Helen Sviderskis was born in Moscow, Russia. She started to draw and paint in her early years and began her more serious study of drawing and painting in the Academician Grabar Fine Art Conservation Center and also privately in the studios of renowned art professors in Moscow. In addition to her career as a painter, she was a fine art conservator and iconographer. Thanks to her profession as the paintings conservator, she was able to travel and visit many old Russian cities. This way she studied painting methods by copying remarkable ancient frescoes and paintings. Knowledge gained in ancient painting methods allowed her to evolve a technique that enriches her paintings. After immigration to America in 1987, Helen Sviderskis settled in New York City. She continued her art education by participating at seminars of the National Portrait Society and attending lectures at The Master Class at the Art Students League. She became an American citizen in 1992. After a few years of living in Manhattan, Helen moved to her own artist studio in the scenic Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania. Helen Sviderskis paintings are in both private and official collections throughout North America, Russia, Austria, Italy, Poland, Lithuania, and Romania. Now she lives in Florida, USA. Signed in the lower left H. Cabot was active in Arizona and is known for frontier genre and operated a studio in Tubac, Arizona. A striking and moving nocturnal painting skillfully executed with wide bold brush strokes in the impressionist style. The diminishing low light of the dusk or. Dawn sunlight striking the trees and the sides of the buildings perpendicularly is in vivid, yet warm, contrast to the foreground and the muted shades of blue. On the cliffs along with the fading light of the soft blue sky. The painting measures 38 3/8″ wide x 24 1/4″ high including the frame, image measures 29 1/2. Wide x 14 5/8 high, not examined out of the frame. Please view the depth of the double matted detailed frame in the close up image of the corner of the quality frame. The painting is in excellent condition with no damage, fading or in-painting. It is evident that this painting, along with the other items from the estate, was admired and well cared for, the colors are still very rich. Cabot studied at Vesper George School of Fine Arts and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Mexico College and Oxford University. During the Korean War, he was an Official Navy Combat Artist and produced magazine and newspaper illustrations from that term of duty. He also spent time in Mexico and New Mexico and is a member of the Salmagundi Club. In the late 20th century, he has maintained a studio in Tubac, Arizona. Original Ross Stefan Oil On Canvas, Halfway To Kayenta, Listed Arizona Artist. This is a spectacular original oil painting by listed artist, Ross Stefan (1934 -1999). It was acquired from the private collection of a local Northwest artist. Due to ill health, Ross Stefan moved to southern Arizona in 1953, where he became an art student at the University of Arizona. In his spare time, Stefan worked as an illustrator for the Tucson Daily Citizen, using a melding of his own self-taught style with that of his early muse, Norman Rockwell. This foray into paid work convinced Ross Stefan to quit his studies at the University and begin painting full-time in 1955 in a studio and gallery he established in Tubac. It was also in 1955 that Ross Stefan first traveled out into the desert to spend time with the Navajos, painting and drawing the people and landscapes of the untouched West. From that point onward, Stefans work was amongst the most coveted and best-collected in the state of Arizona, with major retrospectives of his work at the Phippen Museum, the Harmsen Collection, the Denver Art Museum, the Pierce Western Collection, the Phoenix Art Museum and the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center. Ross Stefans scenes of pueblo life and the southern Arizona landscape are still archetypes of the genre, and his legacy is secure as one of the leading Arizona artists of the twentieth century. ” This painting is titled “Halfway To Kayenta. It depicts 3 Navajo figures riding on horseback as they make their way across the snowy Arizona landscape. The painting has a beautiful simplicity to it, which is typical of this style of southwestern art. The painting is an oil on canvas, signed in the lower right corner. It is additionally signed and titled on the verso. The painting is 12″ x 16″. The original, vintage frame measures 24 1/2″ x 20 1/2″. The frame is wood with linen lining. The wider part of the frame has been painted gold with a “distressed” appearance. The inner rim of the frame is silver.
