Check out our entire line… Framed Original Oil on Canvas. Signed by the Artist & One Pilot/Astronaut. Canvas Size: 40″ x 20″. June 29, 1965, 32 year old, Air Force Captain Joe H. Engle enters the history books as the youngest ever to qualify as an astronaut. He earned that distinction by flying the third of three X-15’s built, to an altitude of 280,600 feet, more than fifty miles above the earth’s surface in what officially qualifies as outer space. The X-15 became the most successful research aircraft ever flown, proving the concept of manned, rocket-boosted exo-atmospheric flight, thus paving the way for precision re-entry from space to a pre-determined landing site, a concept used routinely for nearly 100 Space Shuttle missions flown since 1981. Personally autographed on the Canvas by Maj. (From the Private Collection of Casey Law). Check out our entire line… Personal Note from Planejunkie. This is the Original Painting that we used so many years ago to make the limited edition prints. It’s been in a private collection all these years until now. Contact me regarding how you could be the second owner of this fantastic painting. Framed Original Oil on Canvas. Signed by the Artist & One Pilot. Canvas Size: 40″ x 20″ Plane Type. The North American Aviation XB-70 Valkyrie was the prototype of the B-70 nuclear-armed, deep-penetration strategic bomber for the Strategic Air Command of the U. In the 1950s, the North American Aviation company designed the Valkyrie bomber as a large, six-engine aircraft capable of reaching Mach 3+ while flying at 70,000 feet (21,000 m), which velocity and altitude capabilities would allow the evasion of interceptor aircraft, then the only effective weapon against bomber aircraft. In 1961, improved, high-altitude surface-to-air missiles (SAMs), the U. Air Force’s doctrinal change to low-level penetration bombing, the large development costs of the B-70 program, and the introduction of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) to the U. Nuclear arsenal, led to the cancellation of the B-70 program. As such, two prototype aircraft were built, and designated XB-70A; these aircraft were used for supersonic test-flights during 1964-69. In 1966, one prototype crashed after colliding in midair with a smaller jet aircraft; the remaining Valkyrie bomber is in the National Museum of the United States Air Force, in Dayton, Ohio. The Canvas is personally autographed by Retired Test Pilot Fitzhugh “Fitz” Fulton. One of the four original test pilots assigned to the XB-70 program. Along with many fighter aircraft, Fitz also tested the B-36, B-45, B-47, B-52, B-58, B-66, and the XB-70. He was also the drop aircraft pilot for flight testing on the X-1, X-2, and X-15 while flying the B-29, B-50 and B-52 mother ships. (From the Private Collection of Casey Law).
