A very good, fine and large original oil on canvas depicting Jesus and the Samarian Woman at the Well. Signed and dated,”Starace 1898” lower right. Condition is very good, having been re-lined and sympathetically cleaned in the last ten or so years. Housed in a good gilt frame, ready to hang. Mystery Artist C. 16th Century Large Original Religious Work Antique
Any help identifying the hand that did this magnificent antique oil would be very much appreciated. We know nothing about this work other than it is obviously religious subject matter and it is very very very old. There is a very old canvas that the work is presumed to have been done on initially. It looks from the side that the old canvas was attached to a newer canvas. Presumably due to the fragile nature of the paint, the canvas was then mounted to board. We have tried to take pictures to help an educated eye appreciate the condition of the work. We can see that there have been paint repairs over the years, the oil has significant cracking and the varnish has yellowed. We showed this work to a collector friend and they told us they believe it is from c. 16th century, although he was not an expert and we certainly are not either. Please examine pictures closely yourself and draw your own conclusions. Please note that the colors and skin tones appears to us to be a bit more muted in person versus what shows in the pictures. This work will be perfect for 1 a preserver with the talent and means to bring it back to its glory (and likely make a fortune on it) or 2 someone that wants to wrap this beauty in an old gold frame, appreciate the imperfections as a true antique statement piece in that special room in their stately home. This is a very rare amazing find for the right person. We have not had this work appraised and we list it reluctantly. 17th Century Italian Old Master Religious Oil on Canvas Sacred Heart of Christ
Late 17th Century Italian Old Master Style Religious Oil on Canvas. Circa late 17th century. An old master style religious study, depicting angels, the sacred heart of Christ, a serpent and dove. Possibly a Holy representation of love, peace and wisdom. The sacred heart of Christ symbol representing Christs love for the whole of humanity, the serpent traditionally believed represent wisdom and the dove of peace (Matthew 10:16 “be ye therefore wise as a serpent and harmless as doves”). There may be other interpretations. Mounted in a carved wooden gilt frame, with polychrome floral decoration in relief. Painting 40cm x 30cm. Frame 55cm x 47cm. Does require some restoration. There is considerable surface wear, some crazing and some losses to the paint (see photos). There are some losses and wear to the gilding on the frame and a loss to the floral decoration lower left. Old worm holes to the back of the frame, as would be expected. Please also refer to the photographs , they form part of the description. Large 18th Cent OLD MASTER ANTIQUE ORIGINAL Oil on Burlap RELIGIOUS SCENE FRAMED
18th Century (possibly earlier) Original Oil on Canvas, mounted to a board, in the style of the Old Masters, especially those of the 17th and 18th C. “Old Master” (or “old master”) refers to any painter of skill who worked in Europe before about 1800. This piece depicts a group of European religious figures, at left, kneeling and in deep prayer before an altar/niche with a painting – presumably of Jesus of Nazareth. We would say this is a’dark’ painting so most bright spots were caused by lighting and well applied varnish, yet the piece has a luminous quality to it. There are small areas of craquelure (network of fine cracks in the paint or varnish) but the canvas and paint are stable. The piece is not signed, though there may be more info behind backboard – we did not open it. 3 1/2 Wide Dark Wood reverse frame w/ carved gold decoration around is included complementary in this Listing. Canvas measures 31 1/2 X 41 1/2 and is in Good to Very Good Antique condition, with minor paint abrasion near edges and corners. Frame and artwork weigh over 25 lbs.
