A prominent figure among the New York School painters, Mark Rothko moved through many artistic styles until reaching his signature 1950s motif of soft, rectangular forms floating on a stained field of color. Rothko reduced the number of forms in his pictures, and grew them such that they filled out the canvas, hovering on fields of stained colour that are only visible at their borders. These, his best known works, have come to be called his “sectionals”, and Rothko felt they better met his desire to create universal symbols of human yearning. His paintings were not self-expressions, he claimed, but statements about the condition of man. The all-over compositions, the blurred boundaries, the continuousness of color, and the wholeness of form were all elements of his development towards a transcendental experience of the sublime, Rothko’s goal. Adored by collectors but often derided by critics and contemporaries, French painter and illustrator Bernard Buffet courted controversy from the moment he burst on to the Paris scene in the years following the Second World War. Buffets style changed little between his early work in series such as The Horrors of War (1955) and later paintings such as Sumo Rikishi (1980-1). By the 1950s success had transformed this archetype of the Left Bank existentialist into a world-famous artist-celebrity who travelled by Rolls-Royce and holidayed at his chateau in Provence. Buffet had developed a distinctive style of elongated, spiky forms, somber colors and flattened spaces. His signature black outline reduced reality to the point of abstract. PLEASE WAIT FOR INVOICE! William Alexander Falkler, renowned York County artist, passed away on Monday, August 11, 2014, at the Dallastown Nursing Center. He was 88 years of age and the husband of the late Kathryn Grove Falkler. They were married for 65 years. He was born Feburary 6, 1926, the son of Nettie Falkler McBride and Irvin Landis Falkler. After serving in the U. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II, he attended and graduated from the Maryland Institute of Art. He taught art at the York Academy of Arts and became owner, director, and President of the Academy for almost 30 years. These paintings hang in private collections, hospitals, businesses, and public and private galleries around the world. His paintings have won over 50 prizes and awards and are treasured by their owners. He has had 36 one-man art shows. He described himself as a romantic pictorial historian, frantically recording the environment and architectural accomplishments of people, thus trying to capture American heritage for the future. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was warm, friendly, and full of life, and loved to teach art to his many students. He was a member of the prestigious Pennsylvania Society of Watercolor Painters, the York Art Association, the Harrisburg Art Association, and the Louisiana Watercolor Society. He was a member of the York Area Chamber of Commerce, York Historical Society, York Twinning, York Codorus Yacht Club, Stewartstown and York Legions and VFWs, and supporter of the York Symphony Orchestra and Martin Memorial Library. Listed Artist J. E. Stuart Original Oil on Canvas Painting 1917 RARE SUNSET GLOW
Painted in 1917 at Union Peak from Lake Odell Oregon. Numbered 2357 and Signed by Artist on lower left corner, see image. Measures 30″x 40″ Approx. Without the frame from late 1960s. Beautiful Rare Antique Painting. Normally, craquelure is formed by the aging of paints. It can be used to determine the age of paintings and to detect art forgery, because craquelure is a hard-to-forge signature of authenticity. One very Minor Paint loss chip from age, see picture. 100 year Old varnish has darkening. James Everett Stuart began painting at the young age of 8. That same year, his family relocated to a ranch outside of Rio Vista, California. Stuart took lessons from David H. He then studied for five years under R. Yellond and Virgil Williams at the San Francisco School of Design. Also during that time, he studied privately with portraitist Benoni Irwin. In 1881, Stuart opened a studio in Portland, Oregon. Five years later, he relocated to New York and, in 1891, he established a studio in Chicago where he remained for twenty years. These travels are evident in the approximately 5,000 works he is credited with painting. Though he was adept at portraiture, the majority of his paintings are landscapes. Throughout his career, Stuart was a member in several organizations including the Bohemian Club, the Society of Independent Artists, the National Art Club, the American Artists Professional League, and the San Francisco Art Association. In 1912, he opened a studio in Union Square, San Francisco, where he resided until his death in 1941. Exhibited: Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Annual, 1894; American Art Society, 1902 (bronze medal); Art Institute of Chicago; Society of Independent Artists, 1918-19, 1921.
