It is re-listed here. The current provenance can only be traced from the gallery documentation on the back of the piece, the Basquiat estate authentication stamp, to the 2018 sale and and private collector. We are unable to trace this back any further. This estate’s stamp is signed and dated correctly as compared to other pieces of the time cf. Images From the 11/01 estate submission. This does not come with any additional accompanying paperwork as everything else, if there was any, was lost pre-estate sale. Unfortunately, the authentication committee of the estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat (JMB) disbanded in 2012. Additional Information: This is. The image depicts the iconic skull figure, crown, and NY SOS full of color and uninhibited feeling. A testament to the vibrancy and raw talent of Jean-Michel Basquiat. This piece is bold, strong and expressive, a highlight to any modern art collection. Overall framed piece measures 23.5″ x 28″. Paper label en verso reads “GALERIE CHALETTE” along with a New York address. Label lists the artist as “JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT”, title as “Untitled” and the medium as “Mixed Media”. Further information can be found on the Smithsonian’s documentation on the American art Archive. INK STAMP en verso reads “THE ESTATE OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT” and bears the signature reading “Gerald Basquiat” in line with the G. Basquiat authentication services provided at the time. There is some damage/age to the paper label en verso and some minor chipping along the edges of the frame. Basquiat used social commentary in his paintings as a tool for introspection and for identifying with his experiences in the black community of his time, as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism. Basquiat’s visual poetics were acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle. He died of a heroin overdose at his art studio at the age of 27. Basquiat’s art has inspired many in the hip hop music community such as Jay-Z.
