C1940s New York Modern School Painting Of New York City Empire State Building
For sale is a very nice circa 1940s New York School oil on canvas painting featuring rooftops in New York City with a view towards the Empire State Building. The painting features a modernist style view looking east, north east towards the Empire State Building with what is most likely the Chrysler building just to the left further back in the background. In the foreground are rooftops of early New York City tenement buildings and factories. A wonderful view of what New York City looked like before most of these tenements were lost to re-building. The painting is apparently unsigned. The painting having been re-stretched onto a new stretch bar. The bottom half being fitted to a 24 x 30 stretcher from an original 25 x 30 stretcher. There is a one inch fold over on the bottom. There is some lettering that has been cut off in the Lower left corner. Not sure if its a partial signature or not. Illegible but appears to possibly start with a W. The painting having been carefully re-stapled onto the newer stretcher. The old original tack holes still visible. Re-framed in a newer gold gilded contemporary arts and crafts picture frame that compliments the painting very well. This is all we know. From a New York City Estate. A wonderful depiction of early to mid 1940s New York City. Could use a cleaning. Some areas of surface paint loss/wear. (See close up pictures). Framed – 31 x 37. Canvas – 24 x 30.
