LLEGA A LA CIMA. Dimensions: 24 X 36 in. Jose Bedia get his first formal art training in Cuba, at the San Alejandro school from 1972 to 1976, then at the Instituto Superior de Arte from 1976 to 1981. There he encountered genres of Western painting, plus a dash of Socialist Realism. Following a stint in the Cuban Army (he served in Angola, where he found opportunities to extend his knowledge of African art and culture), Bedia resumed his artistic career. In 1985, he made his first visit to the United States for a four-month artist’s residency and participation in a traveling show titled New Art in Cuba. Bedia left Havana in 1990 and after spending several years in Mexico City, then moved to Miami with his wife and son in 1993. Bedia uses the world of visual languages – Kongo and Lakota – to express himself. His adaptive style – also called Afro-Cuban – helps him connect native ritual to its meaning. Original oil painting on canvas by Jose Puyet. Ornate gold frame with matting. Presented here is a fabulous original oil on canvas painting by. Spanish artist Jose Puyet. A beautiful lady leading over the arm of a sofa with a fur muff. The artists uses shades of muted green and blue in the background, her gown is green tone accented with a gold sash. The muff seems as if you can feel the fur, with ermine tails draping the side. Her dark hair is piled up with a gold band and red flower. As she coyly snuggles her face to the muff. The painting is framed in the original ornate gold frame with linen matting and gold liner. Overall with the frame it is 42 1/4″ high, 37″ wide, the canvas is 30″ high by 25″ wide (not standard size). Offered by the family of the original owners. This is a one of a kind original oil, it is not a reproduction or print. Copyrighted by the artist on the back. Jose Puyet Padilla (April 22, 1922-August 28, 2004) was born in Malaga, Spain. Jose was the grandson of teacher Jose Padilla a Spanish artist who began painting in the 19th century, as a child he learned to paint by watching his grandfather. At 20, Puyet entered the Spanish military, due to WWII he was sent to Melilla. His superiors learned of his talent and asked him to create paintings of the families of the high Commanders. Upon returning to Madrid, he struggled as an artist but eventually earned an exhibition at Carrera de San Jeronimo de Madrid. The exhibition was a success and led to 42 more international exhibits. His popularity spread worldwide. In 1984 Puyet was listed in the publication Who’s Who in Art. Today his works are owned by families such as the House of Alba, House of Grimaldi, Placido Domingo and Luis Olivo who maintain sizable collections of his work. TITLE: Barquitos de mi memoria (Boats of my memory). This is acrylic on canvas it is part of my early works that had to do with my coming back to Cuba where I was born in the middle 1990’s. Always looking for a way to mix painting and photography I use to prepare the canvas with white gesso and while it was still wet, I would apply photographic photocopies face down in a way that the ink penetrated the wet gesso. The black&white copies were mostly from my wife and sons and were previously altered in Photoshop by myself. Once the gesso was dry I would wet the paper and rub it off from the canvas, leaving just the image impregnated in the cloth. I would then paint the rest using acrylics. Artistically I use the boats because I remember in my travels to Cuba, looking down to the sea and imagine how many people drowned there trying to leave Cuba while I was confortable inside a plane. I try to blame the virgin of Cuba (Caridad del Cobre) because rulling over the seas she was incapable of saving those lives. I also blame the people that are holding her down by a string. This painting was stretched and framed, exhibited and later dismantled and kept rolled. Signed, titled and dated in the back. Signed also in front.
