Vintage Lady Portrait Oil Painting Listed California Artist Maria Von Ridelstein
Vintage Portrait of a Woman Oil Painting Description and Item Information Up for sale is this beautiful, vintage portrait oil on stretched canvas painting by the well-known California artist, Baroness Maria Von Ridelstein. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This portrait depicts a classy woman who seems to be dressed in a mid-century, 1950s style. She has a serene appearance which is somewhat casual, yet still elegant. The sight area is approximately 23 1/2 inches by 19 1/2 inches. The painting has a newer, yet nicely paired, gold-finished frame. The exterior frame measurements are about 29 3/8 inches by 25 3/8 inches. Unpacked, this piece weighs about 6 pounds 2 ounces. This would be a fine addition to a collection of vintage American fine art. The identity of the sitter is not known. Von Ridelstein is a listed artist on askART. Per askART, she was born in Leipzig, Germany. Von Ridelstein studied art in Paris, Rome, and Munich. She married Baron Herbert Von Ridelstein in Munich. They traveled to Asia, where her husband was imprisoned by the Japanese during World War I. She taught art in Yokohama during his captivity. The Von Ridelsteins moved to Valparaiso, Chile, where she was the head of the art department at the Colegio Aleman; she also taught at the College of the Irish Sisters. In 1926, the couple moved to San Francisco, California. Von Ridelstein worked at the Fashion Art School in the Scottish Rite Temple and at the California College of Arts and Crafts. Following her husband’s death in 1935, she taught art at her home. During World War II, she taught art to servicemen at the USO. In 1968, after 44 years teaching and lecturing in San Francisco, Von Ridelstein was named one of the distinguished women of the year by the San Francisco Examiner. She passed away in San Francisco. Her works included portraits, still lifes, city scenes, and figure studies, along with a few monotypes. Von Ridelstein was a member of the Society of Western Artists, San Francisco Women Artists, and the American Watercolor Society. Her works were exhibited at the Santa Cruz Art League (1938) and they were shown in the San Francisco Chronicle (1954 and 1970). Condition This piece looks great overall. It is ready to hang and enjoy, in my opinion. The painting looks wonderful, with no damage. The frame has very light wear. Terms of Sale 1. Payments must be received within three days of the end of the listing, unless prior arrangements have been made. And international government regulations prohibit such behavior.
