Vintage Hungarian Whimsical Folk Art Oil On Canvas Painting Laszlo Bornemisza
An original vintage oil on canvas painting by Hungarian artist Laszlo Bornemisza (1910 – 1995) measuring approximately 20 x 24 inches in a larger frame. Brilliant colors with craquelure as pictured. Bornemisza (Bornemisza) Laszlo Tiszadada , Hungary May 22, 1910.. Budapest, Hungary 22 May 1995, painter, graphic artist. After literary attempts, in 1940, at age 30 decided to focus on graphic art. The Second World War he served as a war correspondent in Lviv and attended the Krakow Academy. Between 1946 and 1952 he worked for the city of Debrecen apparatus of public education. He founded The Free Trade Union of Artists and from 1952 he lived in Budapest. In 1961, he became a freelance artist. He made visits in 1960 in Poland, in 1962, Italy, Finland, in 1964, and won a scholarship to the annual Swedish government between 1965-66. After departure from post-impressionist influence of Western European experience, he developed a distinctive style, which in the’60s rose to the forefront of Hungarian art. His art consisted of the imagination and reality. He also won considerable success as an illustrator. Many of his works can be found in public collections in Hungary, Poland and Finland. Antique original German game of chess figural oil painting on canvas Folk Art
Up for sale is a wonderful antique original German chess match oil painting. It’s painted with rich color and an exquisite composition consisting of many different figures. There is a lady seated at a chess table in the foreground while the surrounding figures watch. It is painted on canvas and set in a very ornate modern gilt wooden frame that has a green velour matting. The original canvas was re-backed and stretched with new material as seen in last photo. It’s in nice condition with normal ware and measures 24 1/2 inches by 20 1/4 inches framed. It has some paint loss to one face as shown in last photo. Truly Exceptional, Antique, American, Primitive Folk Art Portrait Painting. I believe they call this style of folk art painting “grotesque” as some of her features are exaggerated. She may have been a seamstress (see thimble on hand). Oil on canvas painting. I would date the painting to the early-mid 1800’s. Framed the painting measures 19″ by 15″, unframed: 15 3/4″ by 12″. Excellent-very good antique condition. One tiny dimple (mid-left) that does not penetrate canvas (please see images).
