Harold Laynor Vtg Mid Century Modern Art Bird Mixed Media Oil Painting New York
Vintage 1959 Harold Laynor “Scapic” Bird Painting. Dimensions – 26.5″ Wide x 16.5″ Tall. Painting – 22″ wide x 12.25″ tall. The piece is in good condition. It’s been professionally framed in grey painted board. There is some light wear to the frame. Signed on the lower left Laynor 59. I have several pieces available by Harold. Listed below is his Bio. Laynor was born in New York City in 1922 and embarked on his artistic journey at the age of 12, when he traded his stamp collection for an oil painting set. He attended the Art Students League in Woodstock, NY, and the Pan American Art School. He graduated from Parson’s School of Design. He earned at B. From New York University and his doctorate from The State University of New York at Albany. Laynor served his country in World War II by joining other artists, architects and designers as a member of the famed “Ghost Army”, the 603rd Camouflage Engineers. Wounded in the Battle of the Bulge, he convalesced in Paris and was able to study with Pablo Picasso and was influenced by him throughout his career. Laynor was a Professor of Art Emeritus at Millersville University, Millersville, PA. He was an Associate in Art Education for the New York State Department and was also the Supervisor of Art for the Poughkeepsie School District in New York State. As a renowned artist nationally and internationally, Laynor has won many prestigious awards including the Louis Comfort Tiffany, Guggenheim Fellowship and the Huntington Hartford Fellowship for painting. Laynor has exhibited in many important galleries and many of his paintings are included in special collections. Laynor’s World War II collection of paintings is now exhibited all over the world. These paintings were created during and immediately after the war. An exhibit in Washington, D. To coincide the World War II Memorial, as well as an exhibit in Luxembourg at the General Patton Museum to commemorate the liberation of Luxembourg, are currently on view. It is re-listed here. The current provenance can only be traced from the gallery documentation on the back of the piece, the Basquiat estate authentication stamp, to the 2018 sale and and private collector. We are unable to trace this back any further. This estate’s stamp is signed and dated correctly as compared to other pieces of the time cf. Images From the 11/01 estate submission. This does not come with any additional accompanying paperwork as everything else, if there was any, was lost pre-estate sale. Unfortunately, the authentication committee of the estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat (JMB) disbanded in 2012. Additional Information: This is. The image depicts the iconic skull figure, crown, and NY SOS full of color and uninhibited feeling. A testament to the vibrancy and raw talent of Jean-Michel Basquiat. This piece is bold, strong and expressive, a highlight to any modern art collection. Overall framed piece measures 23.5″ x 28″. Paper label en verso reads “GALERIE CHALETTE” along with a New York address. Label lists the artist as “JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT”, title as “Untitled” and the medium as “Mixed Media”. Further information can be found on the Smithsonian’s documentation on the American art Archive. INK STAMP en verso reads “THE ESTATE OF JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT” and bears the signature reading “Gerald Basquiat” in line with the G. Basquiat authentication services provided at the time. There is some damage/age to the paper label en verso and some minor chipping along the edges of the frame. Basquiat used social commentary in his paintings as a tool for introspection and for identifying with his experiences in the black community of his time, as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism. Basquiat’s visual poetics were acutely political and direct in their criticism of colonialism and support for class struggle. He died of a heroin overdose at his art studio at the age of 27. Basquiat’s art has inspired many in the hip hop music community such as Jay-Z.
