The Artist’s Story. Roger William Curtis was an artist, educator and author from Gloucester, MA, well-known for his seascapes. In addition to his formal education, Mr. Curtis studied privately with plein air painter Aldro T. Hibbard, one of the founding members of the Rockport Art Association. He went on to serve as Art Director for the Burlington Art Gallery (1954-59), the Boston Gallery (1957-62), Legendsea Gallery of A. Hibbard (1960-77), Boston’s Downtown Gallery (1966-71), after which he founded his own Riverview Gallery in 1976. Roger Curtis was very active in the New England artist communities. Most notably, he served as president (1955-59) and treasurer (1966-90) of the North Shore Arts Association as well as on the board of directors (1967-90). He was an exhibiting artist member of the Rockport Art Association from 1976 until his death in 2000. Roger Curtis wrote and illustrated two books: “How to Paint Successful Seascapes: Techniques in Oil” (1973) and “Color in Outdoor Painting” (1977). The Artwork’s Story.
