Earl Graham Douglas Landscape Painting Description and Item Information Up for sale is this unframed, vintage landscape oil painting by Earl Graham Douglas. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This impressionistic painting depicts a landscape which includes trees (they look like eucalyptus trees to me) and mountains. The painting was executed on canvas, which someone affixed to a masonite board. The board measures approximately 14 inches by 18 inches. Unpacked, this piece weighs about 1 pound 8 ounces. This would make a wonderful addition to a collection of vintage American fine art. A torn piece of paper affixed to the back has the artist’s name and address in Pasadena written on it. This painting is not dated. Per askART, Douglas was born in Terre Haute, Indiana. He relocated to Los Angeles in 1887. Douglas’ studio-home was in Pasadena. He was active there until his death. He was a member of the Painters & Sculptors of Los Angeles, the California Art Club, and the Los Angeles Art League. He exhibited at the 1932 Olympiad Exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Condition This unframed painting looks good overall. The painting is clean and bright. As noted above, the painting was executed on canvas which was affixed to a masonite board; there is slight lifting of the canvas along a short length of one edge. To the upper left sky area, there are a couple of very small and minor scuffs or scrapes to the painted canvas, as found (this area is shown in Photo 2, within the blue sky area). The edges of the board have minor losses, and the edges of the canvas have minor wear. Terms of Sale 1. Rare Street Scene of probably Holland see windmill in background, this oil is clearly signed in lower right corner and also has old metal label at bottom center. Total framed measurements are 17 x 15 inches, and canvas itself measures 8 x 10 inches. Canvas is in good strong, tight physical condition with no tears or repairs but could use a cleaning as pictured. Colors are bright but would really pop if you choose to clean. Old wood gilded and leafy frame, once gorgeous, has experienced many areas of loss as shown, but holds tight. Oil Painting of St. Bavo Church by Carl W. Houbein Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage, framed oil on canvas painting by the listed artist, Carl Houbein. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This architectural painting depicts the interior of the St. Bavokerk also known as Grote Kerk or St. Bavo church in Haarlem, The Netherlands. The canvas measures approximately 27 5/8 inches by 19 1/2 inches. The painting is housed in a mottled, gold-finished wooden frame which is newer than the painting. The exterior frame measurements are about 29 7/8 inches by 21 15/16 inches. Unpacked, this weighs a bit over 3 3/4 pounds. This post-war painting would make a wonderful addition to a collection of religious or architectural-themed fine art. Identification This painting is by the listed artist, Carl Weibren Houbein (1915 – 2001). Per askART, the artist was born in Holland as Gerlof Wiebren Houbein, and he later changed his first name to Carl. He moved to Australia or New Zealand around 1953, and relocated to southern California in 1960. Houbein passed away in Los Angeles. Verso, there is writing on the stretchers, as shown, including the date, “15 August 1947″ and the artist’s name, G. The following is also written on the stretcher, “Ge Houbein Haarlem’47” and “Kl Heiligland 48, ” which is an address located in Haarlem; this may have been the artist’s home. Condition The painting looks good overall. The canvas has some rippling, particularly to the lower left, as found. The frame has light wear, but it looks very good overall; the back of the frame has sticky areas, probably from having a paper backing affixed at one time. There is a crossbar connecting the stretchers verso, as found. Please review the photos, and ask any questions you may have prior to purchasing. Terms of Sale 1. While in Boston studying at the Lowell Institute and the Museum School of Fine Arts, he first did still-life paintings and then crayon portraits, finally turning to portraits in oil, for which he became famous. He also did a large number of landscapes in both oil and watercolor. The subjects range from New Hampshire’s White Mountains to coastal scenes. He started restoring old pictures as an avocation and became an authority in the field. Burdick’s paintings hang in many public buildings and his articles on art have been printed in various art journals. As the oldest living member of the Boston Art Club, he was honored by the group when his portrait of then President Coolidge was placed on exhibition at the Club in 1927. Burdick was a contemporary of numerous artists. The Boston Art Club members mentioned in Burdick’s private papers include: John Joseph Enneking, John R.
