BANKSY Original Dismaland Spray Art Souvenirs on canvas and cardboard
Banksy Dismaland Souvenirs 4 pieces of original artwork on canvas and cardboard, plus collectible map/program from Dismaland exhibition Park in 2015. Banksy is an anonymous England-based graffiti artist, political activist and film director. Their satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique. Banksy’s works of political and social commentary have been featured on streets, walls, and bridges of cities throughout the world. Banksy’s work grew out of the Bristol underground scene, which involved collaborations between artists and musicians. Banksy says that they were inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist who later became a founding member of the English musical group Massive Attack. Banksy displays their art on publicly visible surfaces such as walls and self-built physical prop pieces. Banksy created a documentary film, Exit Through the Gift Shop, billed as “the world’s first street art disaster movie”, which made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. The film was released in the UK on 5 March 2010. In January 2011, Banksy was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary for the film. In 2014, Banksy was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby Awards. “Mona Lisa Bazooka” by BANKSY, Original Spray Cardboard, Signed Banksy, Numbered, Enjoy Your Free Art’ written on back. This piece is part of a series that was made for Dismaland Park on scraps of cardboard and left around randomly as free gifts for visitors who found them. Artwork description & Analysis. In this work, Banksy plays upon one of the world’s most famous paintings, The Mona Lisa (1503-4). Although in his piece, the female protagonist wears a headset while aiming a rocket launcher in his typical black and white stencil style. The piece first appeared in the Soho district of West London. While Banksy’s juxtaposition of art history’s most famous female with a powerful modern weapon may certainly be humorous and cheeky, there is more that can be read into the image. While Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa appears graceful and passive, Banksy gives her a powerful, confrontational, and active sensibility. Her facial expression remains just as calm as in the original, however, next to the powerful weapon, her welcoming smile reads as slightly menacing. It can also be read as a statement on how blasé citizens have become to the ongoing realities of war, always taking place somewhere far removed from their own tranquil lives. Spray paint on cardboard, Signed and numbered, this piece is one of the largest pieces found at dismaland, and is very rare with only 25 pieces being made. “Barcode Leopard Tiger” Original Dismaland Souvenir Dismal Canvas, Stamp on back stating “this dismaland souvenir work is an original work of art”, August/September 2015 in Weston-super-Mare. Barcode, often called Barcode Leopard Tiger, is an early and highly coveted stencil artwork created by Banksy in 2004. He released the artwork for sale in an edition of 750, with 150 signed prints and 600 unsigned prints. Some prints include a red stamp in the lower left corner, while some do not. Banksy has used the image of the barcode in other works including the Barcode Shark and art for album covers. The Barcode image itself is one of Banksys earliest. The Bristol-born artist stenciled it onto a wall outside of a house in his hometown circa 1999 or 2000, before he joined the London scene. The urban street art piece vanished in 2010 during extensive remodeling of the property, but re-emerged four years later at a nearby grammar school where one of the teachers revealed that her husband had been one of the constructions workers at the scene of the remodel. The teacher and her husband recognized that the stencil, which was slated to be demolished, was a Banksy artwork. They received permission from the homeowner to cut out the stencil painting and kept it hidden under their own bed for four years, until they were ready to show it. Another rendition of the same stencil appeared on an extremely rare print in the 2002 show Existencilism, Banksys first Los Angeles gallery show. The piece was numbered 1 of 5. “Girl with Balloon” Original Spray Cardboard, Signed Banksy, Numbered, Enjoy Your Free Art’ written on back. Girl with Balloon (also, Balloon Girl or Girl and Balloon) is a 2002-started London series of stencil murals by the graffiti artist Banksy, depicting a young girl with her hand extended toward a red heart-shaped balloon carried away by the wind. The first work was on Waterloo Bridge, and other murals were around London, though none remain there. Banksy has several times used variants of this design to support social campaigns: in 2005 about the West Bank barrier, in 2014 about the Syrian refugee crisis, and also about the 2017 UK election. A 2017 Samsung poll ranked Girl with Balloon as the United Kingdom’s number one favourite artwork. Banksy authenticated he was responsible for the shredding and gave the altered piece a new name, Love Is in the Bin. Several sets of limited edition prints of the work were produced, which became valuable over time. An initial set of 25 signed prints was produced in 2003, while a set of 150 signed pieces, and a set of 600 unsigned stencils were produced in 2004/2005 on canvas and cardboard, some of which were given away at the Dismaland Bemusement Park event as free art souvenirs. In August 2005, Banksy included it as part of a series of murals on the West Bank barrier, a variation called Balloon Debate of the girl floating above the wall while holding onto a bunch of balloons. In March 2014, the third anniversary of the Syria conflict, Banksy reworked the painting to depict a Syrian refugee and added the hashtag #WithSyria. On 13 March, the image was projected on the Eiffel Tower and Nelson’s Column. An animated video was released, featuring animation based on Banksy’s work, narration by Idris Elba, and music by Elbow. In the following weeks, the singer Justin Bieber got a tattoo based on the original art and posted a picture of it on Instagram before deleting it. Banksy posted this picture on his Facebook page with the comment “Controversial”. “Radar Rat” (‘Sonic Rat) Original DIsmaland Souvenir Dismal Canvas, Banksy Event and Logo sticker on back. Comes with original envelope and document stating “this dismaland souvenir work is an original work of art”, August/September 2015 in Weston-super-Mare. Rats are one of Banksy’s most prolific subjects, and Sonic Rat (Radar Rat) is a rare Banksy artwork. The original screen print first appeared in 2004 with a limited edition of 75 signed pieces, all of which feature hand-stenciling on the radar portion. Banksy has reproduced variations of Sonic Rat as graffiti art in the streets, original paintings on canvas, free art pieces on canvas and cardboard for his events, and record label covers. Urban art lovers all over the world have imprinted the image on coffee mugs, t-shirts, posters, and their bodies. In addition to the print, Banksys Radar Rat has also been executed as a stenciled spray painting on canvas. Rats are iconic in Banksy street art prints because they are emblematic of street art itself. Banksy wrote this about rats in his 2005 book Wall and Piece: They exist without permission. They are hated, hunted and persecuted. They live in quiet desperation amongst the filth. And yet they are capable of bringing entire civilizations to their knees. Banksy rats reference the so-called father of stencil graffiti, Blek Le Rat. This French stencil artist, who made his name in the 1980s, was similarly fond of rats as subjects because of their massive, if negatively perceived, impact on populations. Banksys Sonic Rat (Radar Rat) is shown holding a tape recorder in one hand and a sonic radar in the other hand. He wears headphones and appears to be listening intently to the world around him that the bright red sonar rings are collecting. This shrewd rat is far from dopey; in fact, he is representative of the true nature of rats: intelligent, tenacious, and with an arguably unparalleled survival instint.
