18th Century (possibly earlier) Original Oil on Canvas, mounted to a board, in the style of the Old Masters, especially those of the 17th and 18th C. “Old Master” (or “old master”) refers to any painter of skill who worked in Europe before about 1800. This piece depicts a group of European religious figures, at left, kneeling and in deep prayer before an altar/niche with a painting – presumably of Jesus of Nazareth. We would say this is a’dark’ painting so most bright spots were caused by lighting and well applied varnish, yet the piece has a luminous quality to it. There are small areas of craquelure (network of fine cracks in the paint or varnish) but the canvas and paint are stable. The piece is not signed, though there may be more info behind backboard – we did not open it. 3 1/2 Wide Dark Wood reverse frame w/ carved gold decoration around is included complementary in this Listing. Canvas measures 31 1/2 X 41 1/2 and is in Good to Very Good Antique condition, with minor paint abrasion near edges and corners. Frame and artwork weigh over 25 lbs.
