Here is a very NICE large antique oil on canvas Trompe-I’oeil , painting with book pages, letters and small portraits that overall measures about 24 x 30 and although I dont see a signature it could be there under the darkened canvas as it would benefit from a cleaning. The painting is in good “as-found” condition with some thinning in canvas and it wouldn’t hurt to perhaps do a re-stretch as it looks like it might have been put on an existing wood stretcher but this is exactly how I come to find it, acquired from a North Central Indiana estate. Antique Original Oil on Canvas Landscape with Deer in Aesthetic Gilt Gesso Frame
Up for sale is this exceptional antique original oil painting landscape on canvas depicting a stream flowing through the mountains and trees with a frolicking family of deer and flying birds/ducks. This is a beautiful piece with lovely execution and great rich autumnal colors expressed in the reds browns and oranges of the foliage. The painting dates from approximately the 1890s and is set in a gold gilt gesso and wood frame in the aesthetic movement style with flourished edges and trim. The frame has a beautiful worn patina with damages and chips revealing the layers beneath the gold and giving the painting a great eclectic look. The painting due to its age could use a cleaning and could be re-varnished to bring out the true brilliance of the colors. There is a small puncture hole in the leaves of one of the trees on the right side of the canvas as can be seen in the photos the hole measures 1/8. The frame measures 22″ x 19 1/4″. Beautiful Antique Oil Painting with period matching frame. Shows a boy sitting on a bench, while whittling a piece of wood. Estimated Age: mid to late 1800’s. Size of Artwork: 12″ x 18″. Framed Size: 17″ x 23″. Condition: I personally would say that the Painting is in Very Good condition, considering it’s age. It does show some natural color fading, light scratches, light scuffs, all of which should be completely expected for a piece of this age. The work is signed and dated by the author himself (1853). The museum-worthy work was catalogued by Christie’s. The measures of the work are: 101 x 131 cm (39,7 x 51,5 in). Since 1843 at the invitation of Emperor Nicolas I. Worked as a battle painter for the court and became the Zar’s painter; between 1852 and 1854 he worked in Rome. His works can be found in the Russian state museum of St. Petersburg and other great museums. His works are highly coveted for their great pictorial quality and his few works on the market. This work belongs to his last and best period in his pictorial fullness , where he emphasizes the sobriety of light, color and composition that reflects the influence of the Italian school. This magnificent work represents the 24-year-old Countess Elizabeth of Hungary on her deathbed.
