TITLE: Barquitos de mi memoria (Boats of my memory). This is acrylic on canvas it is part of my early works that had to do with my coming back to Cuba where I was born in the middle 1990’s. Always looking for a way to mix painting and photography I use to prepare the canvas with white gesso and while it was still wet, I would apply photographic photocopies face down in a way that the ink penetrated the wet gesso. The black&white copies were mostly from my wife and sons and were previously altered in Photoshop by myself. Once the gesso was dry I would wet the paper and rub it off from the canvas, leaving just the image impregnated in the cloth. I would then paint the rest using acrylics. Artistically I use the boats because I remember in my travels to Cuba, looking down to the sea and imagine how many people drowned there trying to leave Cuba while I was confortable inside a plane. I try to blame the virgin of Cuba (Caridad del Cobre) because rulling over the seas she was incapable of saving those lives. I also blame the people that are holding her down by a string. This painting was stretched and framed, exhibited and later dismantled and kept rolled. Signed, titled and dated in the back. Signed also in front.
