Large 18th Cent OLD MASTER ANTIQUE ORIGINAL Oil on Burlap RELIGIOUS SCENE FRAMED
18th Century (possibly earlier) Original Oil on Canvas, mounted to a board, in the style of the Old Masters, especially those of the 17th and 18th C. “Old Master” (or “old master”) refers to any painter of skill who worked in Europe before about 1800. This piece depicts a group of European religious figures, at left, kneeling and in deep prayer before an altar/niche with a painting – presumably of Jesus of Nazareth. We would say this is a’dark’ painting so most bright spots were caused by lighting and well applied varnish, yet the piece has a luminous quality to it. There are small areas of craquelure (network of fine cracks in the paint or varnish) but the canvas and paint are stable. The piece is not signed, though there may be more info behind backboard – we did not open it. 3 1/2 Wide Dark Wood reverse frame w/ carved gold decoration around is included complementary in this Listing. Canvas measures 31 1/2 X 41 1/2 and is in Good to Very Good Antique condition, with minor paint abrasion near edges and corners. Frame and artwork weigh over 25 lbs. HUGH CAMPBELL Original Oil On Canvas Rancocas Creek From Pine St Bridge NJ
Signed to the lower right corner and title written on the back stretcher. In original frame, excellent condition. Measurement: 29H x 35W. Hugh Campbell was born on December 4, 1905 in Atcheson, Kansas. He moved to the Camden, New Jersey area when he was 10 years old. Hugh Campbell left a nine-to-five job in 1930’s to pursue an artist’s life. He jumped into his new life with nothing but determination and a “feeling” that he could paint. He had no formal training. Training himself was his first priority, which he did by drawing over 1,000,000 free-hand circles and then over 130,000 action sketches of people on the streets. But it was the fields around his boyhood fishing spots in Mount Holly where he felt most at home.
