Vintage Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting Description and Item Information Up for sale is this vintage framed California landscape oil painting. Please excuse the glare in the photos. This impressionistic painting depicts trees with wildflowers (including orange flowers which are probably poppies); beyond the wooded area are rolling hills. The painting was executed on canvas board, mostly in greens and blues, with pops of orange. The board measures approximately 10 inches by 14 inches. The sight area is a bit smaller. This has a vintage, gold-finished wooden frame. The exterior frame measurements are approximately 13 9/16 inches by 17 5/8 inches. Unpacked, this piece weighs 2 pounds 0.2 ounce. This would make a wonderful addition to a collection of fine art. Identification This painting is not signed, and the artist is not known. The scene looks like California, but the exact locale depicted is not known. The painting was acquired in northern California. Condition This piece looks very good overall, as shown. The frame has very light wear overall and some touch-ups to the gold finish. To the back side of the frame, there is small silver of missing wood (see upper right corner on Photo 5); this does not effect the display. In my opinion, this piece is ready to hang and enjoy. This is an enchanting and well done Antique 19th c. California Plein Air Impressionist Seascape Oil Painting on canvas, depicting a moonlit beach scape in San Francisco. Dunand in the lower left. Perhaps you recognize the artist? This work depicts an overcast beach scene in San Francisco, California. A famous San Francisco building, the original Cliff House (1863 – 1894), can be seen at the top of a cliff in the distance. If you look closely, you can see small Impressionistic figures on the beach, with sun hats and baskets. Overall, this is a beautiful and lovely piece, which evokes a mood of calm and contemplation in the viewer. This work is in good condition, with light craquelure from age. The painting has been re-lined on a sturdy waxed canvas, which as no tears or rips. Original gilded wood frame has some chipped / missing gesso at the corners please see photos. Detreville, Listed, Mount Shasta Ca California Plein Air Impressionist River Oil
LISTEDARTIST fine art collection. MOUNT SHASTA river landscape. Early California Plein Air Impressionism. ANTIQUE DETREVILLE, EARLY CALIFORNIA PLEIN AIR IMPRESSIONIST OIL RIVER LANDSCAPE. Beautiful old early Calif CA oil painting. Original antique pie crust frame with partial California framer label verso (see photos). In need of some restoration -frame is chipped at edges and some light restoration to painting is needed (see condition and photos). Signed lower left, “DeTreville”. Piecrust frame, antique California landscape nature scene with river rocks and appears to be lush Northern California forest river in mountain landscape view. In 1892, he moved to California and settled in Stockton where he established a small newspaper called Det’s Magazine. Shortly after 1910, DeTreville moved to San Francisco where, in addition to painting, he worked as a cartoonist for the Park Presidio News. His works were handled locally by Schussler Brothers and Sanborn & Vail, and were also available in his Clement Street studio. The last few years of his life were spent across the bay in Alameda where he died on February 25, 1929. 9×26.75 framed, aprox. MEDIUM: oil on canvas, original antique pie crust frame. CONDITION: In need of cleaning and light frame restoration (see photos). All original as found antique components. Frame has some small chips to edges and cracked off pieces from the pie style frame (see top left edge and various spots of chipping). Old painting is untouched and in need of a professional cleaning and varnish. A couple small scuffs to canvas around the edges and a couple scratch lines (see photos) to the canvas -mostly around the edges from frame rub and age. Consider antique as found, old original condition painting. MARJORIE REED 1915-1997 Early California Arizona Western Impressionist
Born in Springfield, Illinois in 1915, she grew up in Los Angeles where her father, Walter Reed, was an illustrator for Walt Disney. After graduating from high school she attended Chouinart Art School and the Art Center school in Los Angeles. Yet she credited her most important formal training to well known California landscape artist Jack WilkInson Smith. Reed claimed to have moved over eighty times in her life, spending most of her years in Arizona and Southern California. Her longest stay in one place was spent in the Tombstone area where she used to own and operate the Adobe Gallery in the 1960’s and 70’s. Marjorie Reed died while raking leaves a few days after Thanksgiving in 1996 at Campbell Ranch in Vallecito, California. This is a large painting of Jerusalem painted by Reed on her visit to the Holy Land in the 80’s. It is from Mt. Of Olives looking down towards the ancient walled city. A nicely done shepherd with his donkey and sheep & below is the Russian church above Gethsemane. It is a 24″x 48″ oil on canvas signed lower right and title labeled on the back by Reed herself.
