Peter Ellenshaw Original Oil. His scenes are never static; they are infused with the same energy that constantly drives this artist to achieve something new and unique in all his work. Ellenshaw won an Oscar for special effects in 1964 for his work on the film Mary Poppins. Born in the U. Peter learned the highly demanding technique of matte painting, which requires the realism of photography. His work eventually attracted the attention of Walt Disney, beginning a professional association and friendship that spanned 34 films. The original oil painting for sale here dates from 1964 known to be a very productive period in Ellenshaw’s career. At that time, he lived and painted on the Pacific Coast in the Malibu Colony in a studio provided by Walt Disney. Ellenshaw spent 52 years living in Southern California. His reputation as one of the world’s premier seascape artists had grown from many days spent exploring the beaches and coves of the Pacific Coast. In this painting, approaching Storm / Breaking Surf create a perfect contrast with the storm clouds -big blue sky, rocks and tide pools of the Malibu coast. You will find this painting quite stunning and of a deeply resonating beauty. These pictures can in no way convey the painting’s true impact. In its original made in Belgium frame. Is rendered in oil on canvas and measures 30″ x 55″, including the frame. 48.50 X 23.50 without the frame. It is clearly signed “Peter Ellenshaw’64” on the bottom left. As a young man, Ellenshaw met the British portrait painter, W. Day was instrumental in developing the highly demanding technique of matte painting, a technique blending painting with actual scenery creating seamless settings for films. Within a few months of their meeting, Ellenshaw had convinced Day to hire him as his assistant and for the next seven years the two-artist worked closely together on some of the most scenically demanding films of all time including Alexander Korda epics. The Thief of Baghdad. Peter Ellenshaw went on to gain renown on his own, winning an Academy Award for his work on the Disney film. His work included matte painting on the famous rooftops of London sequence. In 1979 the American Film Institute honored him for his 30 year association with Disney Productions. This tribute included retrospectives of his film work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; The American Film Institute, Washington, D. The Film Institute, Chicago, and The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, Los Angeles. In the early 1960s, Ellenshaw began devoting himself to landscape painting beginning with his beloved Southern Californian coast. Over the next several decades he expanded his locations to include the diverse locations of Ireland, the Arctic, Giverny, the Grand Tetons, Venice, Spain, etc. He is particularly known for his unmatched ability to capture in paint the force of the sea on wild rocky shores. In 1983, a retrospective exhibition of his paintings was shown at the R. Norton Gallery Museum in Shreveport, Louisiana, and in 1984 the St. Louis Botanical Gardens Museum honored him with a one-man exhibition. A number of books have been published about Peter Ellenshaws life and work, including. The Art of Peter Ellenshaw. Winner of the 1997 Benjamin Franklin Award.
