JEAN MICHEL BASQUIAT CHARACTER FIGURE. Auctioning unique, expressive color field, mixed media on canvas painting of character and objects composition, signed Jean Michel Basquiat in the lower margin and verso. Approximate width: 25.0. Label and stamp on verso. This artwork was acquired in a folio of paintings and screenprints from Germany, the artwork is accompanied with registration certificate at National Fine Arts Registry, with a letter of description, COA, with transfer of ownership letter and transfer of registration certificate to the new owner, artwork is currently presented and described as in manner of the artist, as is, as was acquired. An iconic Neo-Expressionist image, will enhance any interior or serious art collection. Basquiat’s work is one of the few examples of how an early 1980s American Punk, or graffiti-based and counter-cultural practice could become a fully recognized, critically embraced and popularly celebrated artistic phenomenon. Despite his work’s “unstudied” appearance, Basquiat very skillfully and purposefully brought together in his art a host of disparate traditions, practices, and styles to create a unique kind of visual collage, one deriving, in part, from his urban origins, and in another a more distant, African-Caribbean heritage. The present work represents the ultimate tour-de-force of expressive line, color and form that has come to represent Basquiat’s iconic painterly oeuvre. Expressionist in its exuberance, the frenetic brushwork acts as the framework for the rest of the composition, built up methodically through layers of drips, scrawls and passages of pigment massaged with the artists own fingers. “Basquiat is art’s answer to Jimi Hendrix and Charlie Parker” L. Marenzi,’Pay for Soup/Build a Fort/Set that on Fire,’ in Basquiat , exh. Deliveries are by national postal service. All items are handled and packed with care. I only want to make simple, very simple art, and to be able to do that, I have to re-immerse myself in virgin nature, see no one but savages, live their life, with no other thought in mind but to render, the way a child would, the concepts formed in my brain and to do this with the aid of nothing but the primitive means of art, the only means that are good and true. Gauguin interviewed by Jules Huret, lEcho de Paris, 1891. Gauguin produced works in which the fluidity and expressiveness of the brushstrokes reflect his sense of artistic liberation. His iconic representations of Tahitian women going about their daily lives amidst the splendour of the tropics are amongst the most sensually beautiful images in all of western art, instantly recognisable, and always fused with a voyeuristic eroticism. This picture sings with the intense and highly interpretative palette that marks out the greatest of Gauguin’s pictures from his voyage to Tahiti. During this stay he remained infatuated by the place, and that infatuation suffused his paintings. These took on a new energy after his discovery of a book on the old Polynesian beliefs, which ignited his passion for Tahiti. Size of the artwork is 23.8 x 18.1 centimeters. Very good condition of the artwork can be appreciated, aging of canvas can be noticed. Inscribed Modigliani in the upper right. The artwork is currently unframed, stretched on the original stretcher, further restoration is not necessary. The artworks comes with documentation, a registration at National Fine Arts Title Registry, COA which came with the artwork when acquired, transfer of ownership of the artwork to the new owner and transfer of registry records to the new owner, provenance markings as stamp, label and other writings can be found on verso of the artwork. The artwork is described in the documentation and offered as unique artwork, in manner of the artist. The artwork was acquired in estate liquidation sale in France. For more details and condition of the artwork please view the images. Modigliani was famous during his lifetime, having exhibited internationally in Paris, London, Zurich and New York, and being written about by the leading writers and art critics of his time. Along with Matisse and Picasso, Modigliani incorporated elements of African art into his paintings, thereby revolutionizing Western art. Modigliani was an exceptional colorist who created a rich, distinctive palette that is seen to advantage in his many portraits. The influence of African masks is evident in Modiglianis facial portrayals: the long oval shape of head, blank eyes, long nose, button mouth and extended neck. The often used elongated form and frontal pose give the portrait a hieratic presence of a totem. On Modiglianis obsession with representing the human figure, Lipchitz explained: He could never forget his interest in people, and he painted them, so to say, with abandon, urged on by the intensity of his feeling and vision. As the writer Jean Cocteau wrote, He reduced us all to his type, to the vision within, and he usually preferred to paint faces conforming to the physiognomy he requiredfor Modiglianis portraits, even his self-portraits, are not the reflection of his external observation, but of his internal vision. A portrait of refined elegance and graceful femininity, depicts a beautiful woman, dark-featured possibly a loyal companion and ardent supporter of the artist. With her long, stylised oval face and exaggerated, swan-like neck, this portrait perfectly exemplifies artists mature style; a work of calligraphic elegance that captures the innate beauty and poise for which the artists sitters were renowned. At once highly individualised yet conforming completely to Modiglianis quintessential female “type”the long neck and oval face, large eyes and small, pursed lipsthis painting epitomises the artists extraordinary ability to balance the generic with the unique, the abstract with the naturalistic, and capture the very essence of the figure seated in front of him, or as the poet and friend of the artist, Max Jacob described, “the splendour of the soul” M. Jacob quoted in ibid. The item “Rare Antique Original oil, painting, on canvas signed Amedeo Modiglian w COA” is in sale since Sunday, February 19, 2017. For more details and condition of the artwork please view the images. Cubism, the watershed style invented by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, created a new and ambiguous relationship between three-dimensional form and the flat surface of the canvas. In austere, monochrome paintings, Picasso dissolved the language of pictorial representation into its basic elements of line, light, and shade, creating a subtly shifting grid that animates the entire canvas. Figures merging with the ground, but never entirely vanishes. Such clues as the hair at top corner and the long face identify his portraits, while the right angles rising up in the background may represent paintings stacked against a studio wall. Picasso had affairs with many women and his different painting styles reveal much about his attitude towards them. Picasso’s work remains, and the legend lives ona tribute to the vitality of the “disquieting” Spaniard with the “sombrepiercing” eyes who superstitiously believed that work would keep him alive. For nearly 80 of his 91 years, Picasso devoted himself to an artistic production that contributed significantly toand paralleled the entire development ofmodern art in the 20th century.
