C1885 American School Tonalist Oil On Canvas Landscape Signed M Wakeman
For sale is a wonderful 19th century oil on canvas American School tonalist landscape painting after Robert Swaine Gifford. This painting is signed M WAKEMAN in the lower right corner. Information with the painting states it is by Marion Freeman Wakeman (1891 – 1965) of Massachusetts/New Jersey But we are quite sure this is inaccurate. This painting is clearly a 19th century painting. This work comes with a letter from Smith College (See picture) noting that they have two paintings by Marion Freeman Wakeman But that theirs are signed in her full name. The letter also states they are not able to authenticate works. The other paintings that weve found by her are also signed in her full name. So e believe the attribution to be incorrect. There is a listed California/Ohio artist named Mabel DeWitt Wakeman (1870 – 1942) but her work doesnt match this tonalist style and this painting seems mid to 3rd quarter 19th century in age. Its is a wonderful evening or early morning tonalist landscape looking out over a lake or river under a cloudy sky. The water reflecting the orange light off of its surface the sun. This painting is after Robert Swaine Giffords 1885 painting Near The Coast which is currently in The Metropolitan Museum. The painting was cut and laid down(see pictures). The stretcher and frame are both oxidized in the same color suggesting the gilded baroque frame is original to the painting. The liner looks to have been removed and replaced with canvas matting in which the painting is now aligned for center using metal plates(see pic). We assume the frame originally had a gilt liner band that fit with the painting but was removed during conservation. Overall it is a gem of a tonalist style painting. Condition: Cut and laid down over original stretcher. The baroque frame having normal gesso chips and small gilt losses but overall in very good condition for age. Framed – 16 5/8 x 20 1/2. Painting 7 3/8 x 11 5/8 (cut/Laid down). The item “C1885 American School Tonalist Oil On Canvas Landscape Signed M Wakeman” is in sale since Saturday, December 29, 2018.
