Charles Adam Partridge original Oil on canvas 1914-16 dealers label. Colarado
Charles Partridge Adams, signed lower left. Looks Iconic of his Colorado sunsets. Possibly there is a title beneath the tape, as there is on the stretchers of other similar works by the same artist. The image size is 22 by 29cm, The canvas stretchers on the back measure 9 by 12 inches, Frame is 16 inch by 12 inch. Generally in good original condition with slight specs of paint loss commensurate with a rub, middle left and middle right which have not been touched up. (shown in the pictures). I can find the Los Angeles art dealer – (the label says Art Dealers and Stationers) – Duncan Vail, 732 South Hill Street Los Angeles – whose label is on the back, in records from 1914 to 16 and in the 1920 American Art Annual.. Everything looks like it has this sort of age. I have taken the photographs outside at various angles. The colors are very rich and the combinations make the painting appear different in different lights. A powerful painting, with subtle tonal effects in the deep shade, iconic of the artist. One can see the age in this painting and although you can see past them, the flecks middle right do detract somewhat from the perspective – the ones on the left, less so, because they blend with the sharper foreground. Charles Adam Partridge original Oil on canvas 1914-16 dealers label. The image size is 11.75 by 8.5 inches, The canvas stretchers on the back measure 9 by 12 inches, Frame is 16 inch by 12.75 inch. Some angles bring the red or hotter end of the spectrum out whilst others seem to emphasize the blue end. The range of darker deeper foreground shade colors both contrasting with the much brighter sunset and at the same time complimented by the red tints which pick out the vegetation. One can see from this example why his paintings are much sort after. Interestingly Adams visited Europe in 1914 for 5 months, and as the label dates to this period, perhaps that’s how it got to this country. Likewise he moved to Laguna beach in 1920 and that’s maybe why this particular dealer’s label appears on it. Perhaps a part of him moving there was because it was an established good market for his paintings, he obtaining his artists materials from there, Duncan Vail then according to the label also an art dealer and known as a supplier of artist’ materials…. At the very bottom, I show the back of another painting by Adams also framed by Duncan Vail. The area of North Wales from where I acquired it is high on the list of scenic tourist attractions of the UK, first made famous by JMW Turner in the early 1800s, when travel in Europe was restricted due to the Napoleonic wars, and as a consequence of Turner’s prior produced lithographs the area attracted artistically minded visitors when the railways subsequently opened up the more inaccessible sites. The painting does express age as though it’s been exhibited (as if not under glass) and not cleaned over 100 years and although you can see past them, the flecks middle right do detract somewhat from the perspective – the ones on the left, less so, because they blend with the sharper foreground. Its tempting to touch them up but might be better to see it together with its age. At 100 years old – It being an antique as much as a painting. I bought this at an estate sale of John Montgomery , 7 Glascoed Road Abergele, Wales. In the catalog it was described together with two other paintings as. 41 x 33 cm framed plus 2 other unframed Victorian and Edwardian oil paintings – 2 unframed have damage. It was covered in dust. I wiped the dust off with a damp cloth as there is no craquelure which might chip off. Since then I have used some damp cotton buds to get some of the dirt off. Below at the very bottom, as a separate addendum, in one picture is a montage of the original pictures supplied by the auctioneer showing this together with the other 2 pictures..
