WONDERFUL BIG 1940’s COWBOY PORTRAIT BY NEW MEXICO ARTIST D KUSIANOVICH TOM MIX
This is just a terrific 1940’s painting of a portrait of a Cowboy that looks a lot like Tom Mix, by listed WPA era artist. Cowboy has such an easy going expression in this work that surely belies the hard work and tough life these guys actually lived. But thats the thing about Kusianovich, he can bring out what he sees in a person and put to canvas or paper with ease, detail and feeling in his fantastic portrait work. The cowboy is almost. But I can’t quite place the face though he sure looks a lot like Tom Mix, though I cannot be positive. Just a piece that is a super representation of the ole Southwest. This painting comes straight from the 2nd floor storage area of the family estate and is first time to the market in probably 50+ years. It comes now framed as you see it as I recently got it finished, its framed size is 26″ tall x 19.5″ wide. Any questions PLEASE ask! Some info on the artist. DAN KUSIANOVICH (1898 – 1965) – Painter, Watercolorist & Master Portrait Sketch Artist. DAN Kusianovich was born in. 1898 in Dubrovnik, Croatia, on the Adriatic coast. He moved to NM in the 20’s and studied with Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth as well as the Taos artists in the 30’s during that classic WPA Era. He lived around Fort Stanton in the Lincoln NM area. As well as a few other places in NM and TX. His works were exhibited at the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe and the Albuquerque Museum. He also has a few permanent works in other New Mexico Museums and landmarks as well as in some prominent homes throughout New Mexico. His sketch works have, by some, are considered to be his best medium and work. His art reflects the things he knew and loved best; the Southwest landscape, the Navajo People, and the sea. He died in Albuquerque NM in 1965. The item “WONDERFUL BIG 1940’s COWBOY PORTRAIT BY NEW MEXICO ARTIST D KUSIANOVICH TOM MIX” is in sale since Friday, October 11, 2019. JACKSON POLLOCK – A 1940s SIGNED ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST DRIP PAINTING, HISTORY
WELCOME TO OUR ART-MODERNE. TO CLEAR OUR INVENTORY. ALL ARTWORKS ARE NOW. 70% to over 80% OFF! YES, THAT’S ON EVERYTHING!! AND WE ARE OPEN TO OFFERS!! (Untitled; Framed) Circa late-1940s SIGNED. (This artwork came without any official COAs or gallery documents attached, hence it is offered in our Sale “as is”). Paul Jackson Pollock (January 28, 1912 August 11, 1956), known as J ACKSON POLLOCK , was an influential American painter and a major figure in the ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST movement. During his lifetime, Pollock enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety. He was regarded as a mostly reclusive artist. He had a volatile personality , and struggled with alcoholism for most of his life. In 1945 , he married the artist L EE K RASNER , who became an important influence on his career and on his legacy. Jackson Pollock developed what was later called his “drip” technique , turning to synthetic resin-based paints called alkyd industrial enamels (also known sometimes as industrial acrylic paints), which, at that time, was a novel medium. Pollock described this use of household paints , instead of artists paints, as a natural growth out of a need. He used hardened brushes, sticks, and even basting syringes as paint applicators , as well as allowing paint to pour (or drip) directly from the hand-held, moving can via a hole punched into the can’s bottom. Pollock’s technique of pouring and dripping paint is thought to be one of the origins of the term ACTION PAINTING. With this technique, Pollock was able to achieve a more immediate means of creating art, the paint now literally flowing from his chosen tool onto the canvas. By defying the convention of painting on an upright surface, he added a new dimension by being able to view and apply paint to his canvases from all directions. In the process of making paintings in this way, he moved away from figurative representation , and challenged the Western tradition of using easel and brush. He also moved away from the use of only the hand and wrist, since he used his whole body to paint. In 1956 , Time magazine dubbed Pollock “Jack the Dripper” as a result of his unique painting style. Pollock vehemently denied “the accident”; he usually had an idea of how he wanted a particular piece to appear. His technique combined the movement of his body, over which he had control, the viscous flow of paint, the force of gravity, and the absorption of paint into the canvas. It was a mixture of controllable and uncontrollable factors. Flinging, dripping, pouring, and splattering, he would move energetically around the canvas, almost as if in a dance, and would not stop until he saw what he wanted to see. It is only after a sort of’get acquainted’ period that I see what I have been about. I have no fear of making changes, destroying the image, etc. Because the painting has a life of its own. I try to let it come through. It is only when I lose contact with the painting that the result is a mess. Otherwise there is pure harmony, an easy give and take, and the painting comes out well. Pollock’s most famous paintings were made during the “drip period” between 1947 and 1950. He rocketed to popular status following an August 8, 1949, four-page spread in Life magazine that asked, Is he the greatest living painter in the United States? Pollock died at the age of 44 in an alcohol-related car accident. In December 1956 , he was given a memorial retrospective exhibition at the M USEUM OF MODERN ART (MoMA) in New York City , and a larger more comprehensive exhibition there in 1967. More recently, in 1998 and 1999 , his work was honored with large-scale retrospective exhibitions at MoMA and at T HE TATE GALLER Y in London. This extraordinary ABSTRACT-EXPRESSIONIST DRIP or SPLATTER PAINTING is made in various colors (predominantly green, white, black and brown) on a raw, unprimed canvas. The painted canvas, on its original old stretchers , measures: 29″ x 27″ (73 3/4 cm x 68 3/4 cm). Presented in a deep, lacquered-finish, black-wood, museum-quality frame measuring: 35 1/2″ x 33 1/4″ x 1 1/4 deep (90 cm x 84 1/2 cm x 3 1/2 cm deep). It is SIGNED , on the right-side of the lower front-edge, in black: J. Not dated, circa late 1940s. The painting is absolutely an ORIGINAL PAINTED WORK on canvas; NOT a print or lithograph or any other kind of reproduction. In VERY GOOD CONDITION. Pollock’s spontaneous compositional skills are wonderfully exemplified in this terrific EXPRESSIONIST drip / splatter work on canvas. Of course, much controversy always surrounds what may be an important Jackson Pollock find… All offers and sales will be considered on that basis. We do have PROVENANCE available. SPECIAL NOTE : The very old, original wood stretchers have been matched to the wood used in parts of Jackson Pollock’s barn-studio and surrounding yard. Samples of paint on the stretchers also correspond to paint residue found in the Pollock studio. Research undertaken by one of the previous owners and offered here as additional information. Note: That this painting submitted as sample work to B&B, the signature was on the letter on the ground, lower right. Original Carlyle pinup of the same late 40’s period, from the same collection that I found and bought more than 22 years ago. Top Elvgren experts, Art Amise and Daniel Vancas agreed that this art collection with the many Elvgren originals of the same period including Elvgren’s original “Getting Posted” that this demonstration painting was based was one of the last great cache’ of Elvgren works to be found intact all dating of the late 1940’s. Daniel Vancas also owns the original Elvgren easel and the Elvgren tm, art signature brand as approved and protected by by the Federal Court Order 2001. Elvgren painted more than 450 pinup paintings. This painting is very Rare, as about 40% or more Elvgren paintings have been thrown away and never will be found. Whole ad and calendar company art warehouse though away happened several times in the late 1950’s and 1960. This included many Elvgren paintings. Lost forever in landfills, this one survived, and no one knew! This great one has been found in 1997 by Daniel Vancas and presented here for the very first time. Great condition for age, and typical of Elvgren and other artist pinup paintings with stable oil crazing. Painting has been only lightly cleaned. A Rare resale from private owner after apx 70 years! Don’t miss out! If you like original Elvgren and pinup paintings please see our other art offerings! C OF A and LETTER OF OPINION BY DANIEL VANCAS SUPPORTING THE WORK ATTRIBUTED TO ELVGREN. (C) from the Vancas/Elvgren art archive, 1994, 1997 all rights res. ELVGREN PAINTS A DEMONSTRATION WITH CARLYLE – ORIGINAL PAINTINGS FOUND! ELVGREN Liked this image and painted it several times. This Pinup as featured in the Photography Magazine. These are two Pinup paintings both originals painted 1946-47 24×30 oil on canvas. Then he paints in collaboration an instructional demonstration piece with a contemporary artist at the same time and group, with fellow calendar artist named Carlyle. To put this visual evidence together, here are the photos by order of collection shown. All paintings are oil on canvas and 24×30, and vintage made late 1940’s. It is Estimated about 40% of all of the Elvgren paintings were thrown away. (This painting I still unfound). The rare Original Elvgren painting used for the B&B calendars that I found, owned and resold at the same time. Note: That this painting submitted to B&B, the signature was on the letter on the ground, lower right. Original Carlyle pinup of the same late 40’s period, from the same collection that I found and bought 20 years ago. The skill level is less, technique, style and color pallet are all different from the subject painting though all were painted at the same time period and found as collected together since 1949/1950. As shown is the original Elvgren in comparison to the original instructional demonstration piece. I believe ELVGREN was helping an artist name Carlyle, most likely done while he was working at the ad firm Gross or while giving instructions at the Chicago Art Institute school. Carlyle also submits art to Calendar company B&B with Elvgren collection of same time period. (See painting # 6) Carlyle confirms that Elvgren assisted him in his own signature with notation, “With apologies to Elvgren”, Carlyle, signs on the same letter location. I conclude that Carlyle was apologizing as he was NOT the main artist for the work, nor was he capable of making such a fine work without the demonstration and assistance painting of Elvgren guiding him. Historically, Elvgren did make multiple copies of paintings and teaching, guiding and even completing other artist work. This has been already established in the historical record, personal accounts and books. This I also confirmed with my longtime friend and client, Art Amise, who was both the first true collector and personal friend of Gil Elvgren. Art Amise as well as another early collector who personally showed me what was commissioned from Elvgren of repainting work that he did for the calendar Companies. Sometimes they were not signed, or sometimes these artists could use a alias name. This was common practice with illustrators who may not want to conflict with their exclusive contracts with advertisers and calendar companies. Elvgren with this Carlyle. This placed Carlyle’s art with and in connection to B&B and Gil Elvgren at the time. Even the most casual viewer with little experience can see that there is a striking difference in skill and ability of these two Carlyle paintings, and could not be painted by the same artist, unless with a lot of professional help. This grouping of original Elvgren paintings was bought by one person directly from the Ad Company shortly after, circa 1949/50. Decades later, I acquired them all, still as a group from the very same family. The group included Elvgren and Carlyle paintings. As you can see this demonstration painting is exceptionally good and could only be ELVGREN demonstration work, helping Carlyle, as Elvgren was known to help younger artists while demonstrating his painting techniques even directly on their canvases as well. Since I owned both of these paintings and have the 25 years experience and expertise working with, restoring, publishing, and replicated 240 Elvgren Pinup paintings, I can certify that the upper half of this Pinup body, all of her face and hair could only be painted exclusively by Elvgren, and with the Elvgren color palette, not the Carlyle color palette. This opinion is further supported by comparison to a unique original painting that was painted by Carlyle alone (without the master artist Elvgren’s assistance) that was from the same period and originally bought with the collection of Elvgren originals including the very same Getting Posted, Perfection, Elegance and several other original Elvgren paintings of the 1946-48 period; one can visually conclude that Carlyle could not paint the “Getting Posted” demonstration painting without the assistance of Elvgren. The collection of the art found together continues to cement this obvious connection between the two paintings and the two artists at the same time and period. This was about 20 years ago. After my client, unfortunately, passed away, I acquired this demonstration painting from his wife to offer again. I have enjoyed it for a couple of years now and this is my first offering of this painting in 20 years. Yours truly, Daniel Vancas. Here’s another great 9×12 oil on board original painting by Fred Darge, mint condition of “The Texas Hill Country” A one of kind and a real beauty for any collector! Fred Darge was active/lived in Texas. Fred Darge is known for western genre-cowboy, landscape. Biography from the Archives of askART. The following is from David Darge: Friedrich Ernst Darge Born: March 1 1900 Rendsburg, Germany Died: April 10 1978 Dallas, Texas Entered the U. 14 1923 at Port Arthur, Texas. By 1924 he was in Chicago painting under the W. Artists policy and attending the Art Institute of Chicago from where he graduated. While in Chicago he painted and made model sail boats, an interest he acquired in the German Merchant Marine at the age of 16. He also married, became a father, and managed a painting trip throughout Minnesota and the Dakota’s with his wife and son. By July of 1933 he had separated from his wife and son in Chicago and had settled in San Antonio, Texas as a starving artist. In September, 1935 he moved to Dallas where he finished his paintings during the winter months and spent the summers painting on the ranches in West Texas and New Mexico. He entered the Army on Nov. 11 1942, served in the south Pacific and was honorably discharged on March 22 1944. He went to work in the defense industry for North American Aviation as a technical illustrator until the wars end.
