Albert Wasserman New York City Extraordinary MALE NUDE Model Painting ASL NYC
Up for sale is an Albert Wasserman nude male painting. Extraordinary and VERY RARE. This painting measures H18.5 x 23 (UNFRAMED and no stretcher). Wont cry if it doesnt sell. PLEASE NOTE there are extra pin holes on the canvas (pictured). Normally theyre off the canvas surface but these are on the canvas corners. Thank you for sharing all the stories! We still have over 1000 more to sell so check back often. Wasserman must be smiling down! ALL OF THE WASSERMAN PAINTINGS we sell were taken off the frame/stretcher by his family for transport/storage (unless noted). Most of canvases in the collection were cut crooked but that didnt interfere with the framing. Nail holes from original framing and larger holes (photographed) for storage. Im sure this painting was handled, moved, stacked, leaned onyou name it. Also has pin holes from being displayed in the studio! IT COMES FROM A NYC ARTIST STUDIO. Wasserman loved painting New York City… Wasserman, a lifelong New York City artist, was a member of the famous Art Students League, the famed Salmagundi Art Club and served in World War II where he painted battle scenes. This remarkable collection spans his entire career with some marked ASL (Art Students League). The portraits, of which I have hundreds, were all taken off their original stretchers for transport and storage. I believe this was done by the family after he passed. The figures almost feel alive. All New Yorkers, thats a guarantee. No two paintings are alike which makes this collection so remarkable. I have no idea how they were stored. It looks like the family was going to start some kind of cataloging process but abandoned the idea. Well be listing MOST of the collection over the coming YEARS. The older/more substantial pieces Im saving. Wasserman was a special artist but by all accounts a BETTER human being. He was loved by generations in his NYC neighborhoods. His students are too numerous to list. The collection belongs in a NYC museum. Let us know if you need it sooner. We just opened our first studio in Irvington, NY. Blocks from the Hudson River. Were super friendly (youth track coach/educator), and easy to deal with. We take pride in being good human beings. Thank you for looking at our items. Ask as many questions as needed. Its never a bother. Wasserman graduated Evander Childs High School, Bronx, NY 1937. Pulitzer Scholarship 1940 led to National Academy, studied with Sidney E. Dickinson and Ivan Olinsky. Studied at Art Students League with Charles S. Painted portraits and scenes across Europe. Stationed at the end in Marseille where he met his wife of 55 years, Sylvette Marchetti (deceased). Taught since 1955 at Jackson Heights Art Club and at Educational Alliance Sirovich Senior Center since 2001. Always with a sketchbook even on subway. Painting class every Saturday until mid September. Member of Salmagundi Art Club where he won numerous prizes. Always a gentleman and adored by his students. Loved and adored by his children Sandra and Daniel. May his gorgeous work live on. It retains the original Heavy Gilt Plaster and Wood Shadow Box type 1890’s frame. Including frame the work measures 22 3/4″ high by 28 5/8″ wide and unframed 12″ high by 18″ wide. Signed at lower bottom Right, as seen close-up in picture 4. Tonalist painting depicts rock, pond, cattails, Queens Ann Lace with muddy background. Landscape and marine painter Albert Babb Insley was born in 1842, growing up in Jersey City, New Bersey. He was active early in the arts. At age fourteen in 1856, he received his first major painting commission of the Llewellyn Park Estate of D. Otis; and the same year he left school to become an apprentice photographer under his father, Henry Earle Insley, who was one of the earliest pioneer photographers in America. In 1860, at age 18, Insley made his first of many painting trips to the Green and White Mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire and to the Shawangunk Mountains of New York. When only twenty-five, Insley began exhibiting on a regular basis at the National Academy of Design in New York City, having exhibited 36 times from 1862 to 1898. He continued his artistic studies, even as an exhibiting artist, with the well-known Jasper Cropsey in 1864 and 1865. By the early 1860’s he was an art instructor with Henry L. Hillyer at New York University, Waverly Place, New York City. He was also a long-time exhibitor from 1869 to 1891 at the Brooklyn Art Association. In New York City, he lived and worked at the Tenth Street Studio Building for 48 years. He also took regular painting trips North of the city and across the Hudson River in New Jersey, as well as in the New England states. He also painted view of New York Harbor, Staten Island and Bayonne, New Jersey. In the early 1880’s Insley’s work reflected the influence of the Barbizon School of France. Insley took an art class on glazing techniques with George Inness Sr. Who influenced hi to become looser and more expressive. During the summers of 1864 and 1865, he studied landscape painting with Jasper Francis Cropsey at his home on Greenwood Lake, which caused him to lighten his palette. The long-lived artist died in Nyack New York in 1937 at age 95. His memberships included the Boston Arts Club, Brooklyn Art Association, Nanuet Painters and Sculptors Guild, National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Salmagundi Club. His collections include the Archives of American Art, Washington, D. Cragsmoor Free Library, New York; Delaware Art Museum, Wilmington; Harding Museum, Chicago; Jersey City Museum, New Jersey; Preservation Society, Newport, Rhode Island; and the Rockland Historical Society, New York.
