Arthur Cohen Original Painting Provincetown Cape Cod 16 x 12. 1990+/
It is titled, Provincetown and was done in the late 1990s but is undated but signed in two places. Size is 16 x 12. It has been kept in a heated and cooled and smoke free environment. The painting is in excellent shape, including the handmade frame. Born in 1928, Cohen grew up in the Bronx and drew prodigiously as a child. After the war he took classes at Cooper Union and the Arts Students League. He remained in New York City his entire life with the exception of summer stints in Provincetown. Considering himself an outsider to New Yorks 50s and 60s art scene, Cohen painted to please himself. His modest interiors of his wife Elizabeth, an accomplished concert pianist, capture the elegance and intensity of intimate music-making silhouetted against a flood of reflected light. His iconic Provincetown landscapes are filaments of land wedged between expanses of sea and sky depicting a place outside time. Cohen died in 2012. His legacy is a body of work built of transparent layers of paint and thought, allowing us to believe that the moment will go on forever. Cohens work has been collected by major museums and corporations, as well as noted contemporary artists. Arthur Cohen remembered – Local Newspaper Story. Arthur Parton (1842-1914) American Hudson River School Oil/Canvas Tonalist NY
This highly atmospheric tonalist landscape of dramatic sky at dawn is very well executed employing a sophisticated knowledge of light, color and perspective. The painting itself is measuring about 18 (46 cm) by 26 (66 cm), and frame is measuring about 20 3/4 (63.5 cm) by 28 3/4 (84 cm). It is signed and dated by the artist in the lower left corner. The painting would be a very sound investment and a great addition to any collection. Along with his younger brother Ernest, Arthur Parton was a central member of the Hudson River School. Born in Hudson, New York, Arthur trained under William Trost Richards at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and began exhibiting in Philadelphia at the age of twenty-two. Richards influence can be seen throughout his early work, which followed the naturalistic mode of the Hudson River School. After spending a year in Europe in 1869, he began to experiment with the style of the Barbizon School, creating pastoral landscapes with softer brushwork and a pronounced attention to tone. As he incorporated aspects of Luminism, Tonalism, and Impressionism into his landscapes, his work came to exemplify the diversity of American art in the second half of the nineteenth century. Parton spent the majority of his career in New York, establishing a studio in the Tenth Street Studio Building and painting throughout the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. He enjoyed widespread recognition; his painting of the Shenandoah River was published in William Cullen Bryants Picturesque America and he won medals and prizes from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, the American Art Association, and the St. Louis Exposition of 1904. His work is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Newark Museum, the Hudson River Museum, the High Museum of Art, and the Washington Country Museum of Fine Arts. Please note that most of the items we sell are vintage or antique, and therefore they have some imperfections due to age, wear, etc. Anything I consider significant I would mention in the description.
