Antique Early American Folk Art Portrait handsome Man Empire Picture Frame 1840
This nicely preserved historic oil on canvas portrait of a handsome, 20-something man check out the eyebrows! With pleasant, subtle smiling facial expression and tousled hair with near spit curls is housed in its original mahogany on pine frame retaining original varnish and measures 30 1/4″ x 26 1/8″ overall; 26″ x 22″ actual. The subject is depicted with his arm casually draped over the back of an empire side chair and engaging the viewer with the frankness and piercing dark brown eyes. The work has stable paint with some very small pinpoint spots of loss in the background and the surface of the painting is fairly dirty with no obvious inpaint. It has an early 20th century re-lining and is mounted to its original stretchers. I added the modern steel clips as the bent nails previously employed were loose and a potential threat to the canvas. It comes from a Massachusetts family collection and the identity of the sitter is unknown. This is a fine 19th century Victorian Portrait of a woman. What attracted me to this particular portrait is the light of her face. The focus is on the features, the expression, the story that is revealed in her eyes and how it speaks her truth. The truth of a simple woman. Not adorned in high fashion or jewelry. A light in the darkness. The painting itself measures 30″ x 25″ and is displayed in an Art Nouveau carved wood frame measuring 35 1/2″ x 30 1/2″. Unsigned, but obviously painted by a professional artist. Condition: Craquelure, light scattered in-painting, possibly relined. Thanks for stopping by. The item “19th c. Whitfield an American Classic. A very rare African American Folk Art-Outsider Art Masterpiece by the elusive painter in her signature iconic style medium, acrylic/watercolor on canvas board. Appropriately titled,’Day is Done’, the painting is accompanied with a fascinating narrative describing the painting subject and hand written and signed by the artist herself. Although’Day is Done’ has been highly sought after for decades by museums and collectors, the painting is being offered here for sale for the very first time. Mary Whitfield has signed’Day Is Done’ twice, on the front of the painting with her distinctive, MW, and with her full signature found on the reverse of the canvas. Dimensions 16″ x 20″. Mary Whitfield was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1947 when her mother was nineteen. Her father walked out on their wedding day so Mary spent the first years of her life in the home of her maternal grandparents. It was a loving environment with two aunts who each had eight children. The home was filled with family stories and traditions. Marys grandmother was an active soldier in the Civil Rights struggle. As a child, Mary developed a vivid imagination and loved to spend hours entertaining her younger sister and cousins, by telling stories that she illustrated with drawings. When Mary was seven, her mother remarried a man from New York and moved there with her sister. She and her sister would spend every summer in Alabama. In Great Neck, Mary and her sister were pioneers in integration, being the only black members of the student body. During the early years of her marriage, Mary began having the compulsion to create things after her children were put to bed. She would often find old plywood and housepaint in her garage and would paint paintings. This compulsion became a continuation of her love for storytelling that filled her lonely nights. Bringing to visual life a variety of stories became her escape from the sadness in her marriage. Over time, she found that creating art was a way of coping with her depression. Whitfield focuses her rich paintings on the historical and modern plight of African-Americans. The powerful works contain little detail; the figures have no facial features. Instead, the drama of their gestures or body language conveys the feeling of the painting. The American Museum of Folk Art wrote that through her spiritually powerful images and writings Mary Frances Whitfield re-interprets and documents stories told to her as a child. Her deceptively simple yet touching portrayals of the disquieting and heroic history of African Americans convey injustice, suffering, love and optimism. Day Is Done’ is a masterpiece, a virtual tour de force. The paintings of Mary F. Whitfield are found in the renown museums and in private collections. Arthur Parton (1842-1914) American Hudson River School Oil/Canvas Tonalist NY
This highly atmospheric tonalist landscape of dramatic sky at dawn is very well executed employing a sophisticated knowledge of light, color and perspective. The painting itself is measuring about 18 (46 cm) by 26 (66 cm), and frame is measuring about 20 3/4 (63.5 cm) by 28 3/4 (84 cm). It is signed and dated by the artist in the lower left corner. The painting would be a very sound investment and a great addition to any collection. Along with his younger brother Ernest, Arthur Parton was a central member of the Hudson River School. Born in Hudson, New York, Arthur trained under William Trost Richards at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and began exhibiting in Philadelphia at the age of twenty-two. Richards influence can be seen throughout his early work, which followed the naturalistic mode of the Hudson River School. After spending a year in Europe in 1869, he began to experiment with the style of the Barbizon School, creating pastoral landscapes with softer brushwork and a pronounced attention to tone. As he incorporated aspects of Luminism, Tonalism, and Impressionism into his landscapes, his work came to exemplify the diversity of American art in the second half of the nineteenth century. Parton spent the majority of his career in New York, establishing a studio in the Tenth Street Studio Building and painting throughout the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains. He enjoyed widespread recognition; his painting of the Shenandoah River was published in William Cullen Bryants Picturesque America and he won medals and prizes from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the National Academy of Design, the American Art Association, and the St. Louis Exposition of 1904. His work is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Newark Museum, the Hudson River Museum, the High Museum of Art, and the Washington Country Museum of Fine Arts. Please note that most of the items we sell are vintage or antique, and therefore they have some imperfections due to age, wear, etc. Anything I consider significant I would mention in the description.
