READ ABOUT OUR GALLERY. HUDSON RIVER VALLEY LANDSCAPE PAINTING WITH FARM VIEWS. In oil on canvas, unsigned; 19th century Item # 906IQW05J. A finely painted scene in oil on canvas executed in the manner of the Hudson River Valley school, this vivid landscape depicts a sweeping view of the countryside. The scene is handled expertly with crisp brush strokes bringing to life the complex array of leaves throughout the trees and wealth of grasses lining the foreground. A lone figure sits on the bank of a still river, the calm waters reflecting impressionistic hints of the bank while horses graze in a distant pasture. The painting is housed in an early and likely original frame with partial remnants of an old oxidized label from Wilmurt & Co. Picture Frames of New York. It is a powerful and very finely executed work. 31 5/8″ H x 43 1/2″ W x 4 3/8″ D [frame]; 20″ H x 32 1/4 W [canvas]. Condition Report: Frame has a few spots of loss and areas of regilding. Canvas would benefit from being cleaned as varnish has yellowed slightly and old spots of inpainting have become more obvious to the eye; light craquelure throughout with specks of paint loss in a few spots. Under UV examination, inpainting visible in the sky above the pasture, around the extreme edges of the painting and a few minor areas of touch up in the foliage. Wai Ming (Chinese American, 1938) Original Oil Painting Girls and Sea Signed

Wai Ming (Chinese American, 1938 -). “Girls and Sea” Original Oil Painting. Wai Ming is the professional artist moniker of Hing Kwok, who was born in Canton, South China on November 11, 1938, the son of a school master with nine children. Extremely poor as a child, he was raised in Hong Kong enduring many hardships amidst a chaotic environment of war and refugee settlements. Despite the focus on practical matters from such a state of affairs, Wai Ming’s love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work in. His primary interest being to capture images of life in fishing villages, or’fish-folk’, who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong, and so was able to find some initial success. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974. There, he experienced initial resistance from galleries and the official art world for a variety of reasons, but was ultimately embraced by dealer Jack Swanson only five months after his arrival. Since then, not only has the demand for his work grown steadily, but he is acknowledged by many as one of the Bay Area’s leading artist. Though self-taught, Wai Ming paints with a rare professionalism which makes an important social statement, and with enough diversity of style to escape pigeon-holing his talent. His original oil paintings and fine art reproductions are admired and collected by people throughout the world. The painting signed lower left.
