Paul Gregg is known for historical-narrative, illustrator. Born Baxter Springs, 1876; died Denver, CO, July 9, 1949. Painter, specialized in western scenes. Left Kansas at age 17 to spend a year at the St. Louis Museum of Fine Art. Worked for the St. Joined the Denver Post staff as an illustrator in 1902. Biography from American Eagle Fine Art. Historically important to the State of Colorado, Paul Gregg’s artistic endeavors are like windows framing the events of times past. Six hundred and four of his paintings remain in the archives of the “Denver Post” in Denver, Colorado, as silent reminders of the struggles that developed this territory. Gregg was born in Baxter Springs, Kansas, where his pioneer parents had settled after coming west by oxcart. He saw firsthand the ways of the Indian and observed that a cow gets up rear-end first, the horse front-end first, the buffalo is immune to diseases, and the front and rear wheels of a stagecoach do not have the same number of spokes. When he painted a covered wagon, it was not a copied scene from a history book, but was an exciting picture from his earliest memory. At the age of seventeen, Gregg left Kansas to spend a year at the St. Louis Museum of Fine Arts. He then was employed by the St. Louis Republic, at a salary of twelve dollars a week. While on a vacation in Denver, in 1902, he met H. Tammen and Frederick G. Bonfils, who persuaded him to join the “Denver Post” staff. As new photography was still in its infancy, newspaper artists not only drew cartoons and painted decorative scenes, but were also called upon to illustrate new events — sometimes from sketches on the spot, sometimes from descriptions, and sometimes from a photographic memory and imagination. Out of his ability to produce life-like illustrations for western stories, Gregg developed his oil paintings for the “Sunday Denver Post” magazine section. For forty years he produced western scenes — one a week, totalling well over 2,000 in all — he also did countless cartoons and sketches. He developed his oil painting from a scant sketch, working nonstop until completed. In the last twenty years of his career, Gregg enlisted the talent of his poet friend, Gene Lindberg, to add verses to his works. The joint effort became a full-page weekly color feature in the Post. Each feature developed from short notes jotted down by Paul or his wife, Marian, as they traveled. Lindberg wrote of his friend, He was above all a storyteller in oils, and the stories were as varied as the West itself — old as the fur trade, new as the streamlining of planes. Original Wahso Chan Oil On Canvas. Beautiful Work Of Art. Masterfully Created
This is an original oil on canvas painting by the Chinese American artist Wahso Chan. He is known for the paintings he made of the Elders in San Francisco’s China Town. Most often these figures would be smoking either cigarettes, tobacco pipes or opium. He was a masterful painter who could capture the mood and character of the subject with bold brush strokes and very stark light and shadow. This canvas was removed from its stretcher but sustained no damage because of it that I can see. This is wonderfully painted work of art and would show well when re-stretched and framed. Feel free to message with questions. And thanks for looking. Chinese Artist Wahso Chan painted the Elders of the San Francisco China Town. Chan was killed at a young age in 1937, due to being crushed between two delevery trucks in San Francisco. Chan was just reaching the pinacle of his career at the time of his untimley death. Mr, Chan’s life spanned from 1911 to 1937. The large painting measures 18 in. That measurement is of actual image not canvas. The item “Original Wahso Chan Oil On Canvas. Beautiful Work Of Art. Masterfully Created” is in sale since Thursday, April 20, 2017. This item is in the category “Art\Art from Dealers & Resellers\Paintings”. CHARLES VICKERY BEAUTIFUL Original Oil on Canvas Clipper Under Sail
We’ve already had a lot of interest on this piece. From charlesvickery. Com: Highly respected by other artists and revered by thousands of collectors, Charles Vickery awed us with his dramatic paintings and charmed us with his humble demeanor. Although he died in September of 1998 at the age of 85, we can look back with pride at the extraordinary career of an extraordinary man. What Vickery is best known for and will be most remembered for is his ability to paint the infinite moods of waterto make it come to life. But what initially stumps everyone is how this talent and passion for the sea could come from a man who lived so far from it. It turns out that he actually explored many different types of subjects early on. Born in Hinsdale, Illinois in 1913, his talent was obvious at an early age, and he worked hard at developing it. But things took a decidedly different path when, just after high school, he discovered the work of some artists he would later refer to as the old prosaccomplished masters such as Winslow Homer, Montague Dawson, and Frederick Waugh. According to Vickery, they were some of the first artists to break through the tyranny of the brown gravy school of marine art. He became captivated with their work, and he was determined to learn their techniques and study their use of color. He later studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Fine Art, but he often credited Lake Michigan as being his greatest instructor. The inspiration it provided and the lessons it taught him were far more meaningful to him than the study of tiresome fundamentals. Vickery loved sketching at the Chicago Lakefront, the Indiana Dunes, and at a number of favorite haunts along the Eastern Seaboard. He believed constant observation of the subject is as essential for the experienced artist as it is for the beginner. Going to the source was absolutely critical. Capturing the elusive essence of the sea is not something you can do by looking at photographs. Movement is the thing, said Vickery. The wind can create sudden drama in as much time as it takes to blink your eyes. To him, the challenge was in respecting the constant interplay of naturethe sun, sky, wind and water all working together. With that in mind, he always considered himself a student. There were some very lean years. Vickery once said that the early years found him along the shores of Lake Michigan living in a tent and eating peanut butter sandwiches. Many hours and many years were spent in all kinds of weather studying wave actions and the color of sky and water. But his painstaking effort did not go unnoticed. It was in 1951 that Eleanor Jewitt, a respected art critic for the Chicago Tribune, first discovered his ability. He was greatly encouraged by her reviews which referred to him as one of the great painters of this age. A bright Winslow Homer. Similar praise would follow, and before long, he was regarded as one of the finest seascape artists of our time. But it was never celebrity he was seeking. The two things he found most satisfying were pleasing those who collected his work and encouraging other artists to further develop their talents. Through his involvement with numerous art organizations, including charter memberships in the American Society of Marine Artists and the Oil Painters of America, he hoped to pass the torch that the old pros had given to him so many years earlier. He certainly accomplished these goals, and he has left an indelible mark on the art world.
