Arthur Cohen Original Painting Provincetown Cape Cod 16 x 12. 1990+/
It is titled, Provincetown and was done in the late 1990s but is undated but signed in two places. Size is 16 x 12. It has been kept in a heated and cooled and smoke free environment. The painting is in excellent shape, including the handmade frame. Born in 1928, Cohen grew up in the Bronx and drew prodigiously as a child. After the war he took classes at Cooper Union and the Arts Students League. He remained in New York City his entire life with the exception of summer stints in Provincetown. Considering himself an outsider to New Yorks 50s and 60s art scene, Cohen painted to please himself. His modest interiors of his wife Elizabeth, an accomplished concert pianist, capture the elegance and intensity of intimate music-making silhouetted against a flood of reflected light. His iconic Provincetown landscapes are filaments of land wedged between expanses of sea and sky depicting a place outside time. Cohen died in 2012. His legacy is a body of work built of transparent layers of paint and thought, allowing us to believe that the moment will go on forever. Cohens work has been collected by major museums and corporations, as well as noted contemporary artists. Arthur Cohen remembered – Local Newspaper Story. Painter Hall Groat II, professor and chair of Art and Design at SUNY Broome Community College, teaches foundation courses in painting, drawing, color theory, and computer graphics. Groat earned a master of fine arts degree in painting and drawing from City University of New York at Brooklyn, a bachelor of arts in art history, minoring in studio art at Binghamton University, and attended graduate and certificate programs at Buffalo State College, Syracuse University, and Savannah College of Art and Design. He also attended summer sessions at Chautauqua School of Art, Chautauqua, NY, and Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vt. Hall Groat II is a prolific painter whose work is noted for its beauty, use of light and shadow and evocative depictions of diverse subjects. Groats painterly realist style is devoid of the rigid formality of contemporary hyperrealism, where his work projects a romantic emotion and sense of timelessness. His primary subjects include portraits, landscapes, city scenes, desserts, cocktail glasses, flowers, still lifes and narrative paintings. Groat takes a classical approach to modern subjects and his subtle use of light results in a certain intimacy. Groat began to paint as a child, as his father is a successful impressionist painter. Groat has had one-person exhibitions at Everson Museum of Art, Roberson Museum of Art, Finger Lakes Community College, Cazenovia College, Jasper Rand Art Museum, Lemoyne College, Wadsworth Athenaeum Museum of Art, and Washington and Jefferson College, and has participated in dozens of group shows throughout the United States. In 2004 Groat was included in the Roberson Museum Centers exhibition, The Cosmos and Chaos: a Cultural Paradox, with artists Lucian Freud, Eric Fischl, Jerome Witkin and several other contemporary artists. His work is included in private and public collections internationally, including Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, Clear Channel Communications, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Cellular One, House and Garden, LTD. Sheraton Hotel Corporation, Binghamton University, Everson Museum of Art, Munson-Williams Proctor Institute of Art, The State University of New York system, Roberson Museum and Science Center and Washington Jefferson College. Provincetown Oil On Canvas 12×12 Original Oil Painting Plein Air Cape Cod
Provincetown Oil On Canvas 12×12. This iconic view of Provincetown is from Bradford Street looking down to Town Hall. I love how the shadows lay across Bradford Street taking the viewer down to the gradual bend of the rd. I was raised in New York and received my BFA at the School of Visual Arts in 1993. I have an MFA from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. My art practice is informed and inspired by the architecture and surrounding landscape of the New England coastline. I walk in the footsteps of past artist’s like Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer and Edwin Dickenson; all of whom who have been a great influence on my work. I use traditional materials to create my work that have remained unchanged to artists for centuries. Most of my paintings are done in oil on canvas but often I use watercolor to work out complex compositions before committing to my final work. Drawing is an important element of my art practice and a continued passion of mine. I seldom share my drawings but sometimes include preliminary sketches with my paintings because they reveal insight into my process and a greater connection to my work for the patron. Many of my clients are repeat customers, adding paintings to their growing collections and curating the work in their homes. This is what happens to a wall in your home when the right image is placed there. Some feedback from my clients.’Thank you for this lovely painting; what an artist you are!
