French Antique Old Master Painting Attrib. Jacques Antoine Vallin, 18th Century
Dreamy oil on canvas of nymphs drinking wine and frolicking in the forest, attributed to Jacques Antoine Vallin, 18th century. There is no apparent signature on the painting that we can see, just the attribution plaque which has been mounted onto the frame at some point. Condition is good despite obvious craquelure and fading in areas where we can see the fibers of the canvas through the paint. We have photographed a couple of small nicks to the frame. One has to be up very close to see these signs of wear; from a distance, the overall effect is magical, especially with that heavenly lighting shining down through the trees. Measures 20 x 17 inches. As the items that we sell are often fragile and irreplaceable, great care is taken during packaging to ensure their safe transit and arrival. Items must be in the same condition as when received. Auguste Toulmouche (September 21, 1829 October 16, 1890) was a French painter known for his luxurious portraits of Parisian women. Auguste Toulmouche was born in Nantes to Émile Toulmouche, a well-to-do broker, and Rose Sophie Mercier. He studied drawing and sculpture locally with the sculptor Amédée Ménard and painting with the portraitist Biron before moving to Paris in 1846 to study with the painter Charles Gleyre. He was said to be one of Gleyre’s favored students, and he exhibited his first paintings at the Paris Salon in 1848 when he was just 19. He exhibited again in 1849 and 1850, by which time he has begun to specialize in portraits. Toulmouche painted in an idealizing version of the dominant academic realist style, and his subjects were frequently Parisian women who belonged to the upper bourgeoisie. He was generally approved by critics, winning medals at the Paris Salon in 1852 and 1861, and he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1870. During his heyday, his reputation was comparable to that of artists like Alfred Stevens and Carolus-Duran. However, with their emphasis on sumptuous clothing and richly furnished domestic interiors, his paintings were also dismissed by some critics as “elegant trifles”, and the writer Emile Zola referred somewhat dismissively to the “delicious dolls of Toulmouche”. Much of his work is still in private collections, but the Louvre, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Nantes, hold examples of his work. Theodore Gudin (1802-1880) Signed French Marine Oil Canvas Boats Figures Sunset
BARON JEAN ANTOINE THEODORE GUDIN. A very beautiful signed oil on canvas by Theodore Gudin which dates to around 1850 and depicts figures unloading boats on a beach at sunset. The work is signed lower right and in very good original condition. The artist is highly sought after and is considered Frances premier marine painter of the 19th century. Sunset on the Coast. Théodore Gudin, as he is usually known, studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Girodet-Trioson. He was subsequently influenced by the Romantic School and exhibited at the London Royal Academy. He was awarded medals in 1824, 1848 and 1855 and the Légion d’Honneur in 1828, becoming an Officer of the Légion in 1841 and a Commander in 1855. French Mythological Nude Camille F. Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco. National Gallery of Art, London. Magnificent antique oil on canvas painting signed and dated Camille Bellanger 1877. Camille Felix Bellanger was one of the most talented and well schooled French artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries. He was born in Paris in 1853 and passed in 1923. Most of his paintings are in museum collections. He was educated at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, The School of Beautiful Arts in Paris. He studied with the finest masters of the time. At the young age of 21 he won second prize at the Rome exposition. He went on to win many medals and prizes for his paintings. He became an art professor and went on to share his knowledge of painting to deserving artists. He became a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1911. This was the most important achievement any artist could attain. He was known for his exceptional paintings of historical subjects and nature. Camille Félix Bellanger received his artistic training at the École des Beaux Arts. In 1875 he won a second class medal in the Prix de Rome competition (Rome Prize). Bellanger painted a range of subjects from history, genre to portraits. Examples of his works include Death of Abel (1875); Angel at the Tomb (1877); Twilight and Morning (1881); Coucou! (1882); Cupid Asleep, A Florist (1883). Bellanger regularly exhibited his works at the French Salon in. And he wrote a book entitled Traité de Peinture (Treatise of Painting). He was also a professor of drawing at the military school of Saint-Cyr. In 1911, Bellanger was decorated as a Chevalier de la Légion dHonneur (Knight of the Legion of Honor). The painting we are offering in our opinion is his best work. It depicts a mythological wood nymph holding a tambourine. To her left is a Satyr term that appears to be glaring at her.
