A great Edward Burrill original landscape, oil on canvas, 1885, signed & dated
Oil on canvas, 9 x 12 inches, 1885, signed and dated in the lower left corner, in a tasteful modern frame. Edward Burrill was a Northshore artist known for his landscapes and coastal scenes. He worked out of a Boston studio for a time but was primarily based in Lynn, MA, and knew many of the important artists of the day, including John J. Enneking, Winslow Homer and Joseph Cole. He exhibited his work regularly at the Boston Art Club for many years, also showing his work at the Silas Barton Gallery and the Lynn Art Club. This painting is in excellent condition and appears to have been relined; there is some very fine craquelure, as is to be expected in a painting of this age, but it is barely visible and the paint is quite solid, with no apparent losses. TERENCE CUNEO original 36x52in OIL ON CANVAS SS Great Britain + mouse
Exhibited at his London retrospective at The Mall Galleries in June 1988. Signed and dated (October 1973) by the artist in the far bottom left corner. Size: painting – 36in x 52in / frame – 40in x 59in. No tears or marks that we can see on the canvas, and likewise no apparent repairs anywhere on the surface, front or rear. It seems to be in fine, gallery condition. The molded wood frame (which has some age, though we are not sure how much) is likewise in nice shape, with just a couple of minor nicks or blemishes to the edges. This imposing and beautifully executed painting by English artist Terence Cuneo depicts the SS Great Britain being renovated in dry dock in Bristol in 1973 (the work is dated October’73). The size (36in x 52in) and grandeur of this splendid piece is something to behold. It was one of the works selected by Cuneo himself to be exhibited at the artist’s major retrospective at The Mall Galleries, London, in 1988, receiving a full-page write-up and reproduction in the catalogue. A copy of this catalogue (in fine condition) is included with the piece. Cuneo appreciators will know that he painted a mouse into each of his pictures, and this one is no exception. See if you can spot it! This is one of the largest Cuneo paintings to appear on the market. The SS Great Britain was successfully renovated after being salvaged from Sparrow Cove in the Falkland Islands, where she had been rotting for over 50 years. Provenance: Previously with the Sladmore Gallery. Exhibited at Cuneo’s retrospective in 1988. Acquired by ourselves in 2016.
