Original oil painting on canvas by Ramon Prats (1929 – 1990), a mid century figurative painter with roots in Spain, Cuba, Dominican Republic, the U. This painting has a decidedly Latin American Mid-Century modern dynamic, very reminiscent of Cundo Bermudez and Rufino Tamayo. It was executed in 1957, just a year after the artist had emigrated from New York to settle permanently in Mexico. It is signed by the artist and dated 1957 bottom right and it is in its original custom made and hand decorated frame. The painting is oil on canvas and measures 18 x 18 inches, with frame it is 25 x 25 inches. The top stretcher bears its original gallery exhibition label from the Galeria Arte Moderno in Mexico City which notes that the title is “Vendedoras”. The painting is in very good shape and has overall cracquelure typical for its age. The frame has separated at two corners and should be reglued, frame is really a fantastic period piece of abstract art in its own right. Ramon Prats American, b. At age 15, he was appointed the official artist and illustrator for El País newspaper in Havana, Cuba, where his family lived at the time. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in Santo Domingo and at the School of Graphic Arts in Havana, Cuba. Upon completing his studies in Cuba, Prats moved to New York, where he studied at the Art Students League of New York. The Associated American Artists (AAA) soon commissioned him under an exclusive seven-year contract. He regularly exhibited at the AAA gallery until 1955, and also showed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1952, he assisted painter Jose Vela Zanetti in painting the mural, “Mankind’s Struggle for Lasting Peace, ” which is still in the lobby of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Prats moved to Mexico in 1956 and was pivotal in spearheading the development of modern art there until his death at age 74 in 2003. Ramón Santiago was born September 4, 1943 in Rochester, New York. He began painting in 1961 while attending Mt. San Antonio College in California. He served with the United States Marine Corps from 1965-68. After his discharge from the service, Santiago’s professional art career began. Audiences have been drawn to Santiago’s unmistakable vision, a figurative style with dramatic fantasy. Elegant portrayals of beautiful women, odd human-like creatures, symbolism, color and recurrent themes create his haunting and enigmatic images. Influenced by Chagall, Dali, Picasso, Pascin and Modigliani, Santiago prefers to work in mixed media and oil on canvas.
