1890 Monumental BJ Harnett Seascape Canvas Oil Painting Nautical Maritime Boat
Monumental antique 1890 nautical maritime seascape oil painting on canvas by B. The scene features a choppy ocean with sailboats / steamboat / rowboat and figures under a sunset. Features an exquisite 1880s frame with layered gesso including lattice, acanthus, beading and foliate designs. Born November 16, 1847 at Whitstable, Kent, England, BJ Harnett came to the US about 1878. A landscape painter, he lived in California, Seattle, Washington, and New York City. One of his paintings, oil on canvas 22 x 36, a view of the Seattle Fire and Mt. Rainier painted in 1889, is owned by the Museum of History and Industry in Seattle, WA. Harnett died on January 29, 1914 at Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York. Wear and distressing commensurate with age, water / moisture damage / paint loss, puncture / rippling to canvas, missing gesso / loss to frame. 63″ x 106″, sans frame 43″ 86″.
