Lovely Portrait of a Girl c. 1700s 18th Century Original Oil Painting
Welcome to Latelier Salon Art Gallery. Oil on canvas in a period giltwood frame. This beautiful portrait is a sophisticated and talented work, endearing in the frank gaze of the sitter, and technically accomplished… Most notably in the skin tones and the very painterly loose treatment of the hair. Byng, who was noted for his portraits of children, has depicted the attractive sitter with great charm. ROBERT BYNG (1666 – 1720) was born in Wiltshire, but is buried in Oxford where he died in 1720, having lived there since before 1714. He was a pupil of, and very strongly influenced by, Sir Godfrey Kneller (Principal Painter to the King and the most distinguished Baroque portraitist in England). Byng’s earliest dated portraits are c. 1697; one of his younger brothers, Edward, was drapery painter to Kneller and his principal assistant. SIZE: 39 x 34 including the frame. PROVENANCE: By descent in a private collection, Buckinghamshire; latterly stored in an attic for many years. Height = 99 cm (39). Width = 86 cm (34). Depth = 6 cm (3). GREAT ASSET FOR YOUR COLLECTION AND ALSO GREAT INVESTMENT. We love hearing from you about the art we offer. 1700’s Cuzco School Antique Oil Painting on Original Canvas
Bendita Virgen con el niño Jesús y u. Na rama de palma. (“Holy Virgin and Infant with a Palm Leaf”). Peruvian Cuzco School, Antique Baroque Oil Painting on Original Canvas, c. Bendita Virgen con el niño Jesús y una rama de palma – Oil on original canvas – excellent good original condition, as shown. A quintessential motif of the Cuzco School was the depiction of the the Virgin Mary. In the oil painting offered today, we see the devoted Blessed Virgin, posing in a garden landscape with the Christ Child, while bearing a palm lead. Bendita Virgen con el niño Jesús y una rama de palma is a strikingly beautiful, albeit somber, rendition of a theme oft seen in the ancient paintings of the Cuzco School. The Cuzco School was an artistic tradition based in Cuzco, Peru during the Colonial period, in the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. When the Spaniards conquered the Inca Empire in 1534, the artistic systems of the Spanish soon followed. The Spanish desire to convert the indigenous peoples to the beliefs of western Catholicism resulted equally in the inculcation of the current artistic forms into a religious artistic outpouring, which however was highly influenced by the indigenous and Indian peoples. The Cuzco School of Painting, one of the most important in American Art, began in the town of Cuzco, Peru – a city which was the capital of the Incan Empire and has existed for nine centuries. It spread across all of the Andean area as an aesthetic expression of society. The Cuzco School paintings were typically of religious topics, and chiefly utilized bold bright colors and gold leaf. A quintessential motif of the Cuzco School was the depiction of the the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. In the oil painting offered today, Bendita Virgen con el niño Jesús y una rama de palma, we see the devoted Virgin and the Christ Child, set in a garden landscape with the far right background displaying a riverside or lakeside view in the distance. The palm branch is a symbol of victory, triumph, peace and eternal life originating in the ancient Near East and Mediterranean world. The palm was sacred in Mesopotamian religions, and in ancient Egypt represented immortality. In Judaism, a closed frond of the date palm is part of the festival of Sukkot. A palm branch was awarded to victorious athletes in ancient Greece, and a palm frond itself is one of the most common attributes of Victory personified in ancient Rome. In Christianity, the palm branch is associated particularly with Palm Sunday, when according to Christian tradition palm branches were waved at the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. It was adopted into Christian iconography to represent the victory of martyrs, or the victory of the spirit over the flesh. Since a victory signals an end to a conflict or competition, the palm developed into a symbol of peace, as shown in today’s painting, Bendita Virgen con el niño Jesús y una rama de palma. Bendita Virgen con el niño Jesús y una rama de palma measures 26 inches x 19 1/2 inches framed, and 22 1/2 inches x 15 1/4 inches unframed. Bendita Virgen con el niño Jesús y una rama de palma is unrestored – wear and condition totally appropriate to age and purpose in life. This painting, coming from an ancient collection, has never been offered before. Please write with any additional questions and/or comments regarding Bendita Virgen con el niño Jesús y una rama de palma , and please inspect my other offerings.
