John Brewster Jr. Pair of American Folk Art portraits Circa 1800, (Sea Captain)
Pair of American Folk Art portraits Circa 1800, John Brewster, Jr. Before the advent of photography around 1850, the only way to capture a likeness was to hire an artist to paint a portrait. Portraits created during this period were almost always of rich or powerful people. In New England at that time, there were no art academies where people could hire trained artists so a number of folk artists emerged to meet the demand for portraits. These artists learned their skills on their own or from neighboring artists, and then traveled from town to town seeking customers who wanted portraits. Was one of the most prominent early American portrait painters. His beautiful portraits have a directness and intensity of vision that were rarely equally. He was also a deaf artist which obviously brought him some very unique challenges. Grew up in Hampton Connecticut. A kindly minister taught him to paint, and by the 1790s he was traveling through Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and eastern New York State, taking advantage of his family connections to offer his services to the wealthy merchant class. Brewster was a prolific, itinerant painter who produced many charming portraits of well-off New England families, especially their children. He lived much of the latter half of his life in Buxton, Maine, USA, recording the faces of much of Maine’s elite society of his time. His first profession paintings were believed to have been painted on July 5, 1795 and his last was painted in 1834. His Deafness may have given Brewster some advantages in portrait painting, according to the Florence Griswold Museum exhibit web page: Unable to hear and speak, Brewster focused his energy and ability to capture minute differences in facial expression. He also greatly emphasized the gaze of his sitters, as eye contact was such a critical part of communication among the Deaf. Scientific studies have proven that since Deaf people rely on visual cues for communication [they] can differentiate subtle differences in facial expressions much better than hearing people. Brewster “created hauntingly beautiful images of American life during the formative period of the nation, ” according to a page at the Fenimore Art Museum website devoted to a 20052006 exhibition of the artist’s work. “Working in a style that emphasized simpler settings [than the “Grand Manner style], along with broad, flat areas of color, and soft, expressive facial features, Brewster achieved a directness and intensity of vision rarely equaled. The Fenimore website also says, His extant portraits show his ability to produce delicate and sensitive likenesses in full-size or miniature, and in oil on canvas or ivory. He was especially successful in capturing childhood innocence in his signature full-length likenesses of young children. Prized by collectors, Brewster is considered one of the big 4 of American Folk art painters that every serious collector strives to obtain. Oil on canvas, frame: 33.75 by 38.5″; view: 26 by 30.75″. Abigail Turner Nabby Tolman Lewis. Birth: 22 Aug 1772 Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts Death: 27 Feb 1843 Burial: Spring Grove Cemetery Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. Samuel Lewis and the painter John Brewster, Jr. Were cousins; seventh generation descendants of William Brewster the elder of Plymouth Colony. (The couple married 7 September 1794 in Scituate, Plymouth County, Massachusetts; they produced five children). Birth: 10 Jul 1771 Falmouth, Barnstable County, Massachusetts Death: 1 Jan 1842 Cheviot, Hamilton County, Ohio Burial: Spring Grove Cemetery Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. Samuel was born in Falmouth, Massachusetts, he was a seafaring captain of coasting vessel on the Atlantic Ocean. After heavy losses at sea, he emigrated west in 1813 and settled briefly in Pittsburg (as it was spelled at that time), Pennsylvania. He died from an inflammation of his kidneys in Cheviot, Ohio in 1842 when he was 70 years old. He was buried at the Methodist Burying Grounds in Cincinnati and was later removed to Spring Grove Cemetery on October 27, 1846. He was one of the earliest burials of the cemetery, which had only opened about a month earlier. He is entombed in the Lewis Vault. This painted pair was mentioned in the book A Deaf Artist in Early America, The Worlds of John Brewster Jr. By Harlan Lane in the section called A Brewster inventory at the back of the book. Under Lewis, Captain Samuel, and Lewis Abigail. As you can see by the black light photos there is some professionally done scattered minor restoration, and the portraits were backed on aluminum panels sometime in the 1980s. The pair of John Brewster Jr. Portraits was appraised on 12/10/07 by Peter H. His family still carries on the antique dealer tradition. Despite the ups and downs on the art market in the last several years, prices for John Brewster Jr. Paintings remain among the strongest in the market. The ad from the prominent NYC dealer Wunderlich and company which is pictured was in the spring/summer 1984 version of The Clarion which represented itself as Americas Folk Art Magazine for the museum of American folk art. Up for sale is a stunning vintage African American portrait oil painting depicting a woman in a vibrant blue dress in the Victorian era. This beautiful and well dressed woman stands with one hand on a green upholstered chair within a wonderful lavish Victorian bedroom. Executed in a folksy style, this painting is well executed clearly painted by a rather talented hand. Dating from 1984 the condition of the painting is excellent and measures unframed 16.25 x 13.5 inches. Executed in oil on canvas I love this painting not only for its wonderful color but also use of geometric shapes on the floor and right half of the composition. The red carpet the stands out immediately attracting the eye before slowing working up the cool blue dress. This painting works really well and looks excellent when hung on the wall. Antique Early American Folk Art Portrait handsome Man Empire Picture Frame 1840
This nicely preserved historic oil on canvas portrait of a handsome, 20-something man check out the eyebrows! With pleasant, subtle smiling facial expression and tousled hair with near spit curls is housed in its original mahogany on pine frame retaining original varnish and measures 30 1/4″ x 26 1/8″ overall; 26″ x 22″ actual. The subject is depicted with his arm casually draped over the back of an empire side chair and engaging the viewer with the frankness and piercing dark brown eyes. The work has stable paint with some very small pinpoint spots of loss in the background and the surface of the painting is fairly dirty with no obvious inpaint. It has an early 20th century re-lining and is mounted to its original stretchers. I added the modern steel clips as the bent nails previously employed were loose and a potential threat to the canvas. It comes from a Massachusetts family collection and the identity of the sitter is unknown. Antique FEDERAL GENTLEMAN Folk Oil Portrait Painting GOLD Gilt Frame c1830-40s
Here is a very nice antique gentleman oil portrait painting. It is framed in its original gilt gold , heavy compo/gesso frame. The man has a Napoleon style hair cut and a dark blue jacket on. His inner vest is a light blue and his. The entire piece measures 18 1/4 x 20 1/4 in. The canvas only measures 12 1/8 x 13 7/8 in. Fair/good as is vintage condition. Some gilt paint overlay chipped/worn off in spots. Painting has mild crazing, nail hole thru top right, and bottom right. I say all this but the item dates to the 1830-40s so almost 200 years old soon. Not new, not perfect. The man is painted in a folk art style. All pictures to judge condition. Perfect for Federal, Victorian, Folk Art, Eclectic and 1800s decors. Check out my other items. Please add me to your favorites list. Whitfield an American Classic. A very rare African American Folk Art-Outsider Art Masterpiece by the elusive painter in her signature iconic style medium, acrylic/watercolor on canvas board. Appropriately titled,’Day is Done’, the painting is accompanied with a fascinating narrative describing the painting subject and hand written and signed by the artist herself. Although’Day is Done’ has been highly sought after for decades by museums and collectors, the painting is being offered here for sale for the very first time. Mary Whitfield has signed’Day Is Done’ twice, on the front of the painting with her distinctive, MW, and with her full signature found on the reverse of the canvas. Dimensions 16″ x 20″. Mary Whitfield was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1947 when her mother was nineteen. Her father walked out on their wedding day so Mary spent the first years of her life in the home of her maternal grandparents. It was a loving environment with two aunts who each had eight children. The home was filled with family stories and traditions. Marys grandmother was an active soldier in the Civil Rights struggle. As a child, Mary developed a vivid imagination and loved to spend hours entertaining her younger sister and cousins, by telling stories that she illustrated with drawings. When Mary was seven, her mother remarried a man from New York and moved there with her sister. She and her sister would spend every summer in Alabama. In Great Neck, Mary and her sister were pioneers in integration, being the only black members of the student body. During the early years of her marriage, Mary began having the compulsion to create things after her children were put to bed. She would often find old plywood and housepaint in her garage and would paint paintings. This compulsion became a continuation of her love for storytelling that filled her lonely nights. Bringing to visual life a variety of stories became her escape from the sadness in her marriage. Over time, she found that creating art was a way of coping with her depression. Whitfield focuses her rich paintings on the historical and modern plight of African-Americans. The powerful works contain little detail; the figures have no facial features. Instead, the drama of their gestures or body language conveys the feeling of the painting. The American Museum of Folk Art wrote that through her spiritually powerful images and writings Mary Frances Whitfield re-interprets and documents stories told to her as a child. Her deceptively simple yet touching portrayals of the disquieting and heroic history of African Americans convey injustice, suffering, love and optimism. Day Is Done’ is a masterpiece, a virtual tour de force. The paintings of Mary F. Whitfield are found in the renown museums and in private collections.
