Paul Burlin, a participant in the 1913 Armory Show, was a Social Realist for most of his career, influenced at first by the Ashcan School and later by Cubism. Then, at the age of 70, he turned to Abstract Expressionism. In the works following the conversion, Burlin, though a native New Yorker, painted in a manner that was somewhat European, and he tended to harass his paint with gestures that often look more considered than automatist. But, possibly affected by Minimalism, he began to thin his color and simplify his shapes, achieving images that were both lucid and expressive. Inspired by a 1913 visit to the Southwest, he became an early member of the. School of western painting and did Indian portraits and landscapes including the. In the 1912 Armory Show exhibition, he was one of the youngest members in the exhibition and the only painter who had visited the Southwest. However, his abstract, expressionistic style was viewed suspiciously by other painters in the West. Burlin continued to visit the Southwest, and in 1917 married Natalie Curtis, a woman from.
