MARJORIE REED 1915-1997 Early California Arizona Western Impressionist
Born in Springfield, Illinois in 1915, she grew up in Los Angeles where her father, Walter Reed, was an illustrator for Walt Disney. After graduating from high school she attended Chouinart Art School and the Art Center school in Los Angeles. Yet she credited her most important formal training to well known California landscape artist Jack WilkInson Smith. Reed claimed to have moved over eighty times in her life, spending most of her years in Arizona and Southern California. Her longest stay in one place was spent in the Tombstone area where she used to own and operate the Adobe Gallery in the 1960’s and 70’s. Marjorie Reed died while raking leaves a few days after Thanksgiving in 1996 at Campbell Ranch in Vallecito, California. This is a large painting of Jerusalem painted by Reed on her visit to the Holy Land in the 80’s. It is from Mt. Of Olives looking down towards the ancient walled city. A nicely done shepherd with his donkey and sheep & below is the Russian church above Gethsemane. It is a 24″x 48″ oil on canvas signed lower right and title labeled on the back by Reed herself. The painting is in a liner with a wide gold frame ready for you to hang and enjoy. Add me to your favorite sellers. 19th Century Early American Primitive Oil Portrait, style of Jacob Eichholtz
Eichholtz did not sign many of his works and this piece is unsigned. It is the spectacular lace collar that leads me to think he is the artist. The picture with frame is 25″ across and 30″ in height. There are two small specs of paint missing to the upper right but the back of the canvas is solid. The age is obvious by the back of the painting and it has not been restored, was very well protected all of these years. My guess is that it was painted in the first half of the 19th century by a master portrait artist who knew his craft well. Nice use of lighting on the face, with the left shoulder of the composition covered by a brilliant red velveteen shawl, a contrast to the staid nature of the subject. Please contact me should you have questions. The item “19th Century Early American Primitive Oil Portrait, style of Jacob Eichholtz” is in sale since Wednesday, September 25, 2019. Early 20th C Tonalist Oil Painting of a Harbor
This painting is an oil on canvas depiction of a harbor. The full moon has broken through the clouds filtering the light over the horizon. The anchored ships and structures provide silhouettes against the filtered moonlight creating a handsome tonal composition. The canvas would seem to be from the first quarter of the 20th c and is unsigned. The canvas measures 8 by 10 to sight and 14 by 16 in the gilt, wood, composition cove frame. The paint surface is in a particularly good and stable condition. The frame shows some minor losses and some slight areas of discoloration to the inner liner which are consistent with age and use.
