This is an original oil on canvas painting by the Chinese American artist Wahso Chan. He is known for the paintings he made of the Elders in San Francisco’s China Town. Most often these figures would be smoking either cigarettes, tobacco pipes or opium. He was a masterful painter who could capture the mood and character of the subject with bold brush strokes and very stark light and shadow. This canvas was removed from its stretcher but sustained no damage because of it that I can see. This is wonderfully painted work of art and would show well when re-stretched and framed. Chan was killed at a young age in 1937, due to being crushed between two delevery trucks in San Francisco. Chan was just reaching the pinacle of his career at the time of his untimley death.
