Abduction in rural America. Inspired by the paintings of Anna May Robertson (Grandma Moses). Bagley’s work depicts the rigors of life on old tobacco farms. He effectively conveys the hardships brought on by farm work in a very uncompromising, stark manner of painting. He uses the objects found in rural settings to recount the brutal facts of daily life but also, the much simpler pleasures enjoyed by farm families in distant places and from an era that he saw was going to disappear forever. For many years, Bagley was represented by Cudahys Gallery of Richmond, Virginia who assisted in promoting his work. Publication of a book about his art In collaboration with Susan Tyler Hitchcock entitled Eldridge Bagley Son of the Soil Soul of an Artist followed in 1997. Today, Bagley is one of the most widely recognized folk artists in Virginia. The painting is approx. 17′ x 24 and framed.
