Few people reach a level of fame where they are instantly recognized by the mention of their last name. When people of any level of art awareness hear the name TARKAY, they know immediately that the speaker is referring to ITZCHAK TARKAY, the living artist whose work is in the highest demand of any today. We are saddened to announce that World-renowned artist Itzchak Tarkay died unexpectedly Sunday, June 3, 2012 after emergency heart surgery. The Israeli artist was visiting metropolitan Detroit as the featured guest at a collector’s event hosted by Park West Gallery. Itzchak Tarkay 1935 – 2012. Tarkay’s works celebrate the beauty and intimacy of woman and are noted for their vivid use of color. His subjects, dressed in shades of red, yellow, blue, violet and green, sit or recline against boldly colored backgrounds. Two women at a café engrossed in intimate conversation. A female figure draped in a patterned skirt lounging on a chair. A melancholy lady alone at tea. These are snapshots of life as seen through the eyes of Itzchak Tarkay. Today, Itzchak Tarkay is one of the most popular and loved artists in the world. A modern master, Tarkay draws upon the entire realm of art history in a body of work that is not only aesthetically agreeable and compositionally seductive, but a cultural phenomenon responsible for countless love letters, innumerable nights of passion and incalculable furtive glances – the very substance of visual poetry. Itzchak Tarkay was born in 1935 in Subotica on the Yugoslav Hungarian border. When he was only nine years old, the Nazis sent Tarkay to Mathausen concentration camp. While still at school in Subotica he won a prize for excellence in painting. In 1949 he and his family immigrated to Israel and were sent to a transit camp for new arrivals at Beer Yaakov. Their next two years were spent in a kibbutz. In 1951, Tarkay received a scholarship to the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem, where he studied for a year before having to leave due to difficult financial circumstances at home. In order to continue his scholarship, he was allowed to study under the artist Schwartzman until his mobilization to the Israeli army. After returning to the familiar environment of Tel Aviv, Tarkay enrolled in the Avni Institute of Art, which he graduated in 1956. His teachers there were Monkady, Janko, Schtreichman and Sematsky. Tarkays roots as a painter take hold in the decisive years of modern art. The bright colors and flat patterns build on the paths forged by Matisse, Mouly, and the Fauves. Like Picasso and Tobiasse, the sculptural grows stronger than the pictorial. Tarkay constructs a perspective and then takes it away. The paintings go through an abstract transformation, the perspective dissolves into colors and shapes, her face remains, and the world reconstructs around her. She is the natural woman – satisfied, calm, and serene. There is an ancient mystery in the work of Tarkay that must be discovered for oneself. This is what Tarkays paintings achieve. Tarkays fertile female form is a timeless enigma. The poses that Tarkays figures manifest are every bit as classical as The Winged Victory or Venus de Milo. Tarkay dives deep into history, and brings up pearls for our times. The quality of his line is organic, the quality of his woman, his art, is magic. And there you can search all of my auctions.
