Nicholas Takis (1903-1965) Original Oil on Canvas Painting of A Reclining Woman
From a local estate in Fairfield County, Ct. Here is a beautiful original oil on canvas by internationally renowned American artist Nicholas Takis, who has been called a pioneer in American Expressionism with a style that has been described as semiabstract. The painting depicts a reclining woman holding a newspaper with fruit and coffee or tea on a table near her feet. Takis was known for his paintings of Mediterranean women. This one is fairly large as the visible image is 29.5″ wide and 14.5″ high. It is in it’s original frame, which measures 37″ wide by 22.5″ high. It is signed lower left N. The frame is quite nice with gold accents mixed with the rustic grey portion that blends well with the colors in the painting… Particularly the mosaic-like background or wall behind the woman. In the top right portion of the frame and thin white line of molding that sets off the canvas , there is an area that is perhaps 2 high that looks to have had some water damage. There are three faint lighter lines through the black edge of the painting and these streaks, while barely noticeable, look to have been the result of the water stain to the frame. A conservator could very easily fix both the frame and inner frame molding as well as the small area of the canvas that was lightly affected. Please see the photos as they show the best images of the description of the painting. After speaking to a few dealers who are familiar with Takis, I believe that the painting dates from 1940 to 1950. In looking through several web pages and sites, I didn’t find another painting that was similar to this one, except for the repeated depictions of Mediterranean women, many of which looked just like the woman in this painting. The back of the painting is typical of mid-century framing as the canvas is stretched on all four sides with the canvas exposed. The lower right corner tabs are missing (that tighten the corner), but these also can be easily either found or fabricated. They are like two tiny cedar shingles from your roof that are wedged into two corner slots to hold the canvas in place. Fresh to the market, this “Reclining Woman” (I do not know the official title or even if there is one for this piece) is a wonderful example of Takis’ style and work and it makes a nice addition to your collection. Thanks very much for stopping by. Please ask any questions you may have and we will do our best to answer them quickly.
