Original Sri Lankan Buddhist Art Jathaka Painting Hand-Painted Acrylic Canvas
Jathaka Story – Original Hand-Painted Sri Lankan Buddhist Art Acrylic on canvas. Handmade frame by village women artisans. Direct from artist, sealed. Original hand-painted artwork depicting a scene from the Jathaka Tales – the classical stories of the Buddha’s previous lives. This piece portrays the Lord Buddha in a previous incarnation as a king, celebrating alongside his people in a royal procession featuring an adorned white elephant, richly dressed courtiers, and lush symbolic flora set against a deep vermillion background in the traditional Kandyan style. Inspired by the sacred murals of Degaldoruwa Raja Maha Viharaya, a revered 18th-century cave temple near Kandy, Sri Lanka, renowned worldwide for its Kandyan-era Jataka murals. Dinidu Nilanka Iddamalgoda is a Sri Lankan artist and craftswoman from Ja-Ela. A former government craft instructor, she has completed over 100 craft courses and teaches traditional arts including painting, embroidery, natural dyeing, and eco printing. She is the founder of Eco Pack, a sustainable craft business specializing in handmade goods from banana fiber and recycled paper. A portion of proceeds from this sale – along with income from her broader artwork and craft business – directly supports workshops Nilanka leads for women from underprivileged communities in Sri Lanka. These workshops provide training in traditional crafts and create pathways to economic independence. HANDMADE FRAME & BOARD – CRAFTED BY VILLAGE WOMEN ARTISANS. Both the frame and backing board of this artwork are entirely handmade by women artisans from a rural Sri Lankan village as part of Nilanka’s community craft program. Each frame is one-of-a-kind, produced entirely by hand from natural sustainable materials. Video documentation of the frame-making process is available upon request. Medium: Acrylic on canvas.
