The whole painting is held in one colour – deep blue from the top of the sky to the nearest wave – and everything is said with light instead: the cold white of the moon, the broken glitter running towards the viewer, the pale edges of the clouds. A single schooner stands to the right, small and dark, under full sail. It is far enough away to be quiet, close enough that you wonder who is aboard at this hour. The water is worked in short strokes, lighter and more broken where the moonlight falls, almost black in the troughs away from it.
