Evening on a wide lake, seen from under the trees. A great oak leans in from the right and arches overhead, and its branches make a natural frame for everything beyond – the pale water, the far shore, the low sun burning gold behind soft cloud. One white sailboat sits out on the open water, catching the last of the light. The sun lays a straight green-gold path across the lake that runs right down to the grass at your feet. The foreground is deep in summer growth, worked in many layers of green, while everything in the distance is kept soft and hazy – that is what gives the painting its air and its sense of real depth. A warm, peaceful landscape, the hour when the day lets go. ABOUT THIS PIECE. Medium: Oil on canvas mounted on board. Size: 16.5 x 11.7 in (42 x 29.7 cm), unframed. Signed by the artist.
