M. G. Friedrich Large Original Oil Painting Yacht Race
Original Oil on Canvas. This oil on canvas yachting scene, by M. Friedrich, shows a gaff rigged sloop with two aboard in a yacht race, probably off Cape Code, cruising through rolling seas along the coastline with several other sailboats in the distance. The painting measures 24″ x 36″ or with overall frame dimensions of 29″ x 41″ and is signed lower left, M. Friedrich and has a. The painting has a few places of in-painting over craquelure, but nothing that really detracts when viewing the painting, so overall the painting is in relatively good condition. Friedrich was born in Strasbourg, Alsace Lorraine in 1908, eventually moving to the South of France where he adopted the ways of the sea and became an exceptional yachtsman. He joined the free French Navy and after World War II he decided to leave the military and pursue his love of painting. Friedrich became best known as a highly technical and detail artist in the creation of seascape paintings, particularly of coastal yacht racing. Many of his paintings are taken from the Mediterranean and New England coastlines of yachts under full billowing sails, racing through white capped seas. Though he kept his home in Southern France, he would often spend his summers on Cape Cod, where he was known to depict the Kennedy family and friends on board their yachts. Friedrich has been compared to the great artist Montegue Dawson, often being called the poor mans Montegue Dawson. His works are in public and private collections throughout France, Germany and the United States. The item “M. G. Urbain Huchet was born in Rennes, France on April 28, 1930 After studying law and owning a textile factory for four years, he decided in 1960 to devote himself entirely to painting. Huchet spent his first three years as an artist in Port-Aven, following in the footsteps of Gaugin and Emile Bernard, both of whom influenced him a great deal. He does many paintings of the landscape and the typical people of this region. His love of the Brittany coast and the sea can always be seen in his work. After moving to Paris in 1963, he spent time painting and writing in Europe, the Middle East and South America, where his inspiration from the markets, peoples and landscapes have become very well known. He made 14 trips of more than 4 months each, from Mexico to Brazil, via Peru, Central America and the Caribbean islands. A luxurious portfolio of lithographs of Egypt shows his love of that country. Urbain Huchet has held exhibitions throughout the world, however Paris is where his largest number of works have been produced. At least 300 editions of lithographs have been printed of his works, all produced by the artist himself in different workshops in Paris and Cannes. Huchet died in 2014.
